Which wife? Stockhill or Calthorpe?
« on: Tuesday 25 April 06 02:24 BST (UK) »
I've finally got some family tree software, but as I was entering names, I find myself with two wives for the same person! My William DAVY, b. abt. 1818, son of John Porter, married Ann Stockhill, daughter of William on 20th April 1847.
However, on the 1861 census I have
William Davy Head mar. 43 Farmer,
Ann wife mar. 35
John 12, William 8, Robert 6, Alice 2, Fred 4months.  AND
Caroline CALTHORPE, wife sister, u/m 34 Housemaid.
Is it possible I have the wrong William - even if the birth dates fit, and that he has a son William born 1853 who I know is definately one of my Williams?
Help please!!

Sorry folks - senior moment. William is son of John DAVY, not Porter.

Ann STOCKHILL bap 9 April 1826 Scrivelsby, dau of Mary (IGI) - that should be her - matches birthplace on 1861 census.

I would say that Caroline's age was actually 24 (not 34) ... this gives Mary STOCKHILL 10 years to marry Mr CALTHROP (possibly Bartholomew) and move to Skirbeck ... although I'm not sure she ever made that move.

1841
Mareham le Fen
William CALTHORPE 70 Lab
Mary 70
John 42 Serv
Bartholomew 40 AgLab
Mary 45
Caroline 5
All born Lincs

I can't spot a suitable Ann (CALTHORPE or STOCKHILL) ... unless Ann STOCKING 15 FemServ in Horncastle (2 or 3 miles from Scrivelsby) was her (the only occurrence of this surname in Lincs in 1841).

Note that whatever the truth is, it's extremely unlikely that Ann's father was called William STOCKHILL.

William and Mary CALTHORPE had several children bap in Wood Enderby around 1800.

1851
Mareham le Fen
Bartholomew CALTHORPE 53 Gen Lab, Wood Enderby
Mary 54 Crowle
Caroline 15 Servant, Mareham le Fen.

I realise Mareham le Fen isn't Skirbeck, but there's no other CC around that I can see.

Wood Enderby, Mareham le Fen and Scrivelsby are all within 3 miles.

Most IGI entries for the name STOCKHILL in Lincs seem to be at Wroot - 5 or 6 miles from Crowle.

Mary gave birth to a George STOCKILL in Scrivelsby in 1821, also an Elizabeth in 1818 (father named as Thomas WADDINGTON).

Wow!! What a can of worms this might have opened.
I"m very grateful to you Geoff, for finding all that info - I just didn't know where to go with this one. I might have mentioned in my original post that the error was only picked up when I started to enter everything on my new Family Tree Maker.
Thankyou once again,
Regards,

I hope this doesn’t complicate matters, but in my family tree, I have Mary Ann Stockhill (bn 1795) married to Bartholemew Calthorpe (bn 1799 d: 8 July 1862).

They had a daughter Caroline (bn 1835).  She would have been 5 at the 1841 census.

They lived with Bartholemew’s parents William Calthorpe and Mary Kirk (both died in 1846).

It’s perfect acceptable to presume that Mary Ann Stockhill went by the name Ann in the household, as her mother-in-law had the same name.

Hope its not confusing!
 :)

Coincidentally, I was doing some work on the outer branches of my tree yesterday and found that William's sister (Mary c1821) was connected to my lot.

Here are their parents' burials

John DAVY 3 July 1859 Skirbeck (75)
Susan DAVY 16 Sept 1872 Skirbeck (79)

John was bap 11 July 1784 Stickford (of William and Elizabeth)
Susanna SMITH bap 1 Feb 1795 Wainfleet (of John and Elizabeth)
