Regiments in Warrington Lancs 1803
« on: Tuesday 25 April 06 02:49 BST (UK) »
I have found a baptism for a Charles McQuade in Warrington 1803, shown as son of John McQueed (McQuade) soldier and Esther.   Could anyone help me find the regiments stationed in or near Warrington at this time.   I would like to find out more about the parents and or siblings.

Thank you Wendi for your warm welcome.

I have indeed tried Warrington Library, without success.

Was hoping a military historian might see my request and could help.

Hi Betty !

Well I know for sure - that the South Lancashire Regiment ( Prince of Wales Volunteers ) who were formed from 40th and 82nd Regiments of Foot - were at The Depot Orford Barracks Warrington and the Head Quarters of the Militia and of the 1st Volunteer Battalion were also there !!

Also there were regiments at Preston - St Helens - and Bolton - who drew many recruits from Blackburn Wigan and Bolton !

Do you have the certificate ? does it just say soldier ?

Hi Annie,

Thank you for your message, this will give me something to work on.   I can probably get a researcher at the PRO to check these different regiments for me.

Yes the baptism only gives the father's occupation as "soldier", as this was in 1803 before birth certificates.

Had a quick look, seems very interesting, will have a more indepth look later, as I also have found other ancestors in different regiments, so this website may be a great help.

Many thanks
