Joseph Piper Downham 1841-51
« on: Tuesday 25 April 06 07:57 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Wondered if anybody had any ideas.

In the 1841 Census I have Joseph Piper 30 shoemaker, living with his wife Sarah 25 living in Downham with their four sons.

By 1851 Sarah is a pauper widow living in Ramsden Bellhouse (next door Parish) with her four sons and one daughter.

The trouble is, I cant find any record of Josephs death. I have tried the Downham and R.B. Parish Records at E.R.O. and also B.D.M. sites on-line and the closest I can find is a Joseph Piper dying in Chelmsford  in Q3 1847.

Any ideas as to wether this is a likely candidate for my Joseph? and if so what was he doing in Chelmsford? It just doesn't sit right with his family not moving.

Chelmsford is 6.9 miles from Downham  so good chance its your man also you had  to register a death  in the place they died so it may be possible he died in Chelmsford i would get the certificate.

I think you are right and I will just have to get the certificate to see if it is the right Joseph, I dont know why, but I have this feeling that it is not the right one though ???

There could be any number of reasons for Joseph being in Chelmsford when he died, one is just simply a visit.
Alternatively have you considered that after the 1841 census, Joseph may have taken his family to Chelmsford and worked there.
I'm not sure if the Resettlement Act was still in force late 1800s, if so that could explain why Sarah and children left Chelmsford after Joseph's death for Downham or Ramsden Bellhouse.  I'm sure someone will let us know if the act was still in force.
It might also be that after Joseph's death Sarah moved back the the Downham area to be near friend/relatives.

I think obtaining the cert is worth a punt and will probably be for the right Joseph, if not, at least it will eliminate that Joseph from the equation.

Don't forget to let us know!!!!!
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Sorry It has taken so long for me to add to this strand, in truth I forgot I had posted it !  ???

The Chelmsford Joseph was not the right one, but he turned out to be part of my tree after all, so no money wasted there ;D

So at some point my search will resume for the elusive Joseph  :(

Hi Frances,

Yes thats him :) Thank you for that, I will see if there is any memorial inscription. His Entry of Death is dated 30th of June 1847, Age 66, Publican.

I tracked him to "The Fleece" or sometimes named "The Golden Fleece" in Chelmsford licensee from 1826 till his death, though I am looking for more information on his time there.

I still of course now have to find Joseph Piper who disappeared from Downham, but thats another day :)

Thank you all
