Grandmothers funeral
« on: Wednesday 26 April 06 16:52 BST (UK) »
It is recorded in the School Log at Churchstoke that my granndfather was absent from school on 1st June 1876 to attend his grandmothers funeral. I am not sure where the funeral was held or which side of the family it was. My grandfathers parents were Edward G. Davies and Marther A Davies and were living at Top Shop also known as Upper Shop Churchstoke. Can anyone please help, it would enable me trace a new family line.

Hi Eric

We might need a few more details!

What is your grandfather's name, date of birth, father's occupation?  Anything else you know about him or his siblings would help.

Do you have his birth certificate yet, as that would give his mother's maiden name?

Hoping to help

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

On 1861 parish of Churchstoke;
Edward Davies age 32 born Llandinor occ; grocer
Martha Davies age 26 born Churchstoke wife
Curm age 4 born Clethinard
Mary Elizabeth age 7 born Shropshire
William age 5 born Clethinard
Francis John age 1 born Churchstoke

Is this the right family?

Looked at Shropshire c.1851, there is a marriage for Edward Davies and Martha Mainwaring apr qtr 1853 Wellington Sal vol 6a page 1376.
Looked there as Mary is born there 1854. Cant find any other marriage in Shropshire or Montgomeryshire.
If these are right I have found more....let me know.

The imformation as I have it on the family is as follows Edward G Davies born Llandrinio 1829,,baptised 9th August 1829. [  I believe his parents were shop keepers in LLANDRINIO, his fathers name was probably Edward and his mothers name was probably Elizabeth . ] It would seem from my imfo that Edward G.[ probably George] Davies got married to Martha A. [probably Anncutt] surename at time of marriage unknown, in the June quarter 1853 ref Montgomery 116/425. The children were Mary Elizabeth born April 4th 1854, William born May 1st 1855 at Buttington. Ann born March 28th 1857 at Buttington. Francis John born November 13th 1859.Edward George born April 6th 1861 Churchstoke. Martha Selina born March 6th 1863 at Churchstoke. Sarah Anncutt born May 14th 1867 at Churchstoke. Margaret born October 2nd 1869 at Churchstoke.Louisa born October 21st 1871 at Churchstoke. Thomas Aeron born October 7th 1873 at Churchstoke. Alfred Owen Davies born March 21st 1877 at Churchstoke. This is the family detail as I have it at present. I am most grateful for your help and replys and look forward to any additional help you may be able to offer. Again very many thanks.

I believe this might be Edward G DAVIES in 1851

1851 census  HO107/2498/344/28

Aaron DAVIES H M 62 - shopkeeper grocer & draper - Salop Worthen?
Mary W M 58 - do wife - Salop Kinnersley
Edward nephew U 21 - assistant to grocer etc - Montgshire llandrinio
Thomas nephew U 20 - ditto - ditto
Elizth JONES servant U 10 - house servant - do Forden

Address: Brockton, Montgomeryshire

Shame it doesn't help too much with his parents, but I will have a look at 1841 too.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

There is no matching family in 1841, with brothers Edward & Thomas and living in Llandrinio.

Of course they might not be brothers.  Do you have certificates to support your thoughts on the parents' names?

Here is a possible: it seems unlikely geographically

1841 census  HO107/1440/13/18

Edwd DAVIES 50 - lab Y
Elizth 45 Y
William 12 Y
Thomas 10 Y
Richard 5 Y
David 2 weeks Y
Jane 8 Y
Margret 3 Y

Address: Port House, Gwistydd, Llanllwchaiarn, Montgomeryshire

Alternatively, there is a family in Shropshire

1841 census    HO107/909/26/6

Edward DAVIES 50 miller Y
Elizabeth 50 N
Edward 11 N
Thomas 10 N
William 7 N
+ various servants

Address: Worthen Mill, Worthen, Shropshire

It seems a much better fit, is not far from the children's birthplace, but the father's occupation is wrong.

What do you think?

;)

Hi.
I have just come across this posting, and my recollection of family talk is that our Gt Gt Grandfather had two mills at one time, although I don't know where they were, so it'S quite possible that the family in worthen is the right one.
Frank, (Eric's brother) :)
