Chelmsford pub query
« on: Saturday 16 October 04 10:43 BST (UK) »
Horse & Groom, Springfield Road, c1912-1929.
Kelly's directory apparently shows the landlord for the above period as a William ADMER, does anyone possess any publication that shows a William ARMER as the true landlord?.
Many thanks
Jon

Hallo Jon:  I just searched 1881 census and IGI for any ADMERs in Essex and got nil returns. I did the same searches for ARMER and got returns for both (some with spelling variants).
My provisional conclusion would be that Kelly's entry contains a transcription error. A check to the electoral register ought to be conclusive. If you wish I'll check it out next time I'm at Essex RO

Many thanks, if there are no positive results in the meantime I would appreciate that.

Hi Ned ....

Thought I'd take a look at the 1901 census on line - and there are no male Admers between the age of 10 and 40 (as at 1901) listed whatsoever !

By the same count there are 13 entries for William Armers aged between 10 and 30 (again, as at 1901).  Nearly all are from the N of England and none from Essex.

It would be worth a visit to the 1901 census online to check for some possible links.

All the best

I did these look-ups of electoral registers at Essex Record Office
(a)
Document ref: C/E 1/1/25 Chelmsford Division 1913
page 228 Parish of Chelmsford North Ward
Armer, William place of abode 219 Springfield Road.
Description of qualifying property Park Cottage, Boreham and Horse and Groom, Springfield Road
(b)Document reference C/E 2/1/11 Chelmsford Division 1928
page 95 Polling District H Parish of Chelmsford - North Ward
William and Susan Armer of 219 Springfield Road.
I could see no detail of any corroboration that 219 Springfield Road and Horse and Groom were one and the same property.
I looked up these 2 at random.
Hope this helps
