William Markwick & Noble
« on: Friday 28 April 06 08:00 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to build up and search for existing Family Members of Albert Edward Markwick born Battersea 1907

Dad Robert Markwick 1858 brighton Sussex, his wife Kate Noble 1864.( Married Brighton 1884 ) her Father William Noble of 10 Mount Pleasant - Deceased Drew a blank with him.

Robert's Dad Was William Markwick of 46 Hereford Street, Brighton Married to Sarah Markwick can't find William Markwick 1861 and 1851 census. I can see him 1881 and 1871.  I think he is a 10 year old in a ORE Hastings work house 1841. ::)

Hi Karen,

can't find William Markwick 1861 and 1851 census.

Do you have access to the 1861 census? Have you discounted the family RG9/605 Folio 6 pages 5 & 6? William Markwick, married to a Sarah, with a matching son  Robert, living in Hove.

Did it give any occupation for William Noble? The best match I can see is a chimney sweep.
In 1861, his wife is called Helen.
By 1871, she has still the same birth place and age but she's now called Catherine and they have a daughter of the right age named Alenen  ???

Who are the marriage witnesses? Any noble family?
The best match I see for Kate in 1881 is the one at Princess Louise Home which suggests an orphanage... and indeed William doesn't seem to be around anymore by then.

There is a death for a William Noble age 47 in Brighton in June 1875...

Have had a quick look through BMd and I see a Catherine Noble registered in September quarter 1865  :-\ There may be others.
The complete BMD's are currently free to search here

OK, I take it the William MARKWICK you are referring to in the 1881 is the one b.1831 married to Sarah? Occ. Fish Hawker

The only William to a Sarah marriage in Brighton on FreeBMD (doesn't have ALL marriages of course) is...

Marriages Sep Q. 1850 - Brighton - Vol 7 page 408
William MARKWICK and on same page Sarah POPLETT

You'll really need to get Robert's birth cert to clarify his mother's details. Wasn't he born in Battersea?

Looking in the Directories I can see...

Kelly's Post Office Directory of Sussex 1859
William MARKWICK shell fishmonger - 21 Sussex Road, Hove

which could be that William??

The other William MARKWICK who crops in Brighton is...

Post Office Directory 1855
William MARKWICK coal merchant, 13 North Lane, Brighton

Melvilles Gazetteer and Directory of Sussex 1858
William MARKWICK coal and wood dealer 33 Upper Russell St, Brighton
