Same Person?
« on: Friday 28 April 06 21:45 BST (UK) »
My ancestor William Moxham was married in Preston on the 16th of February 1795. On Familysearch there is no birth record for any William in Preston, but there is one christened in Trowbridge, Wiltshire on February 13th, 1771.

Is it possible that these two are the same?

Possible, but given the geography, unlikely.

I take it by "familysearch" you would mean the IGI.
Eliminate untranscribed records before venturing further afield

A little aside - which Preston do you mean?

There is at least one other Preston near Cirencester, apart from the obvious one in Lancashire.

All things are possible  ;)  But many are less likely than others  :o

Given the number of people whose births/baptisms were not recorded at all at that time, it is perhaps more likely that your William was born closer to the area where he married (I presume it's the marriage in Preston, Lancashire - and I note that both are extracted records).

It's marginally interesting that the 1771 William is the only MOXHAM in that Wiltshire batch (which goes from 1718 to 1812, then 1837-1874) ...

Have you searched the 1841 census just in case a William of appropriate age (for the baptism or the marriage) survived that long?
