WINTERBOTTOM - Hulme?
« on: Saturday 29 April 06 20:40 BST (UK) »
My GGGrandmother was Eliza BRUCE (1843).  She married John Winterbottom SMITH (1843) in 1863 in Manchester, where John said his father was William Winterbottom SMITH - Cabinet Maker.

On the 1871 the family are using the name SMITH (though I've only found Eliza and the children), but in later censuses they are using WINTERBOTTOM and use this name throughout.

I cannot find "William Winterbottom SMITH" and the only place I've seen the name John Winterbottom SMITH is on the IGI but that gives his father as "George Winterbottom SMITH" and mother as "Martha"

Today I have finally found what I believe to be the family on the 1861 Census in Hulme -

RG9/2891/106/17

William (1808) bn Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, Joiner
Martha (1818) bn London, Surrey
John (1843) bn Manchester, Lancashire
Isabella (1853) bn Manchester

I cannot find them on any of the other Censuses   :(

Can anyone else find them or suggest anything that might help please?

Thank you

~ Claire

Hi Claire

I'm trogging through the unfilmed returns but if this is your man, he is in the Slater's Directory of 1851 at 6 New Islington as a joiner [William Winterbottom].

I'll let you know if I find them but definitely not on the Hulme disk.

Hi Claire

Hmmm

1851 census, Ancoats, 6 New Islington
HO 107/2226 folio 158 pg 16

Martha Winterbottom; wife; mar; 33; shopkeeper; Middlesex, London
John do; son; 7; scholar; Manchester

No sign of William but Martha is clearly wife not head & also married!

Still doesn't tell you if these are the correct people or not though!

You're a star with this Sandra - the whole thing is SO confusing it's untrue - right down to John and Eliza WINTERBOTTOM being transcribed by the enumerator as "HARRISON" in 1881 (def right family because they're living at the same house in 1891)

In 1871 Eliza is named as Eliza SMITH with two of the children and she's married but at her parents house for some reason - John's missing on that one though - it's a real puzzler that's for sure!

You're really helping though so thank you so much - i'm puddled with looking now!

:)

I've just realised that the address that William gives in Slaters is the same address as Martha and John....how exciting!!!
