Clarke Family - Sligo - 1841 census & 1842 Birth
« on: Saturday 29 April 06 23:47 BST (UK) »
I am looking for an English family who were in Sligo between 1840 - 44?

Edward Clarke b. 1807 Herefordshire was in Sligo with the Royal Artillery.
He took with him his wife Jemima b. 1803 Hampshire and children
Edward b. 1831 Portsmouth
John b. 1836 Portsmouth
Jane b 1839 Woolwich

Do they appear on the 1841 census for Sligo?

While they were there Edward & Jemima had another son called Charles R Clarke born about 1842. Are details of his baptism listed any where?

I know they were back in Woolwich in 1844 when son Henry was born.

Any assistance with this would be gratefully appreciated.
Many thanks

Hello BK,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

1841 Census for Sligo no longer exists. First complete census for all Ireland is 1901. As Christopher mentioned civil registration of births in Ireland started 1864.
