Can any one please tell me if it's possible to apply for a birth cert. for the mid 1800s to the appropriate registration district?

Hi Pat,

Yes you can apply to the local registrars office for BMD certificates from when civil registration began in September quarter 1837.  You don't need the GRO reference numbers just the year, I also quote the quarter.  Some offices ask for a SAE, again I do include an A4 envelope, otherwise they send certificates folded in a standard letter size envelope!

This may help with registration districts

Pat,some local register offices don't do marriages unless you know the name of the Church because there are far too many to check, but you could ring them first.
Also ask if you can have a copy of the original entry if its possible or you might just get a handritten or typed cert.

Hi Andy001,

Many thanks.  Is the cheque for certificate made out to Register General?

You'd have to ask,its usually superintendant Registrar or the name of the local council

Just a point, some London Register Offices will not look; I have had experience of a couple where the registration districts have amalgamated or otherwise changed and they have just refered me to the GRO.

Other areas have been really helpful .....!!!!!

And some are really helpful! Sandwell and Halifax are excellent. And Birmingham have searched for a marriage for
me with  no known Church.
If you need any from your local office and can get to it you might be able to get it straight away, well from 15 minutes to an hour anyway :)
