NATION nee MAYNARD - your experience needed please.
« on: Monday 01 May 06 16:28 BST (UK) »
Hi!

I have a Marr Cert for Elizabeth Jane Maynard and Joseph Nation for 10 March 1874 at East Stonehouse in Devon.
He is in The Royal Marines and she is at 44 George Street.
Her father is Thomas Maynard –Manager in Clay Works

On  6 March 1885 she gives birth to Jessie(my Grandmother) in East Stonehouse and on the Cert the Maynard and Joseph RM match up.

The 1891 census for East Stonehouse RG12/1738/85/2 shows Elizabeth Nation and family (sans Joe-who is on HMS Brittania)
The 1901 census for East Stonehouse Rg13/2105/53/28 shows a Joe/Eliz/Edith/Jessie (Where was Edith in 1891? And Eliz has gone from a supposed 54 to 60!!)  Any comments welcome.

The real problem is that I can get no meaningful hits on Elizabeth for 1851/1861/1871 and 1881.

I have found a Thomas Maynard of “Clay” man in St Ewe, Cornwall in 1851 and 1861 but with no children and he appears to be with different wives in each return.

Any gudance would bemuch appreciated.

Hi Tidespring

I looked for Edith, possibly mis-enumerated as MAYNARD, in 1891 and found this

RG12/1808/147/16

Thomas MAYNARD H M 55 - agricl.labourer - Cornwall St Stephens
Emma W M 48 - do Trethiock?
Ethel grandau 7 - scholar - do St Stephens

Address: Wivelscombe Cott, St Stephen, Saltash, Cornwall

Just realised - this is Ethel not Edith - probably too far removed from your criteria!!

Probably needs further investigation...

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Here's a "possible" for Elizabeth in 1851 - father Thomas is listed as a clay labourer on other returns.

HO107/1906/190/26 - Tywardreath
Thomas Maynard  Head  41  Labourer  b Roach
Mary Maynard  Wife  40  b Lerran
John Maynard  Son  16  Labourer  b St Blazey
William Maynard  Son  14  Labourer  b St Blazey
Thomas Maynard  Son  11  Labourer  b St Blazey
Mary A Maynard  Dau  10  Scholar  b St Blazey
Elizabeth Maynard  Dau  7  At home  b Tywardreath
Joseph Maynard  Son  4  At home  b Tywardreath
Cathrine Maynard  Dau  2  At home  b Tywardreath

I've gone through the birth images 1880-1883 inclusive, and can't find a registration for Nellie or Miriam Nation in East Stonehouse...  ???

There's an Edith Ellen Nation b Falmouth Dec Q 1881 who might possibly be Edith/Nellie - Edith's age is hard to read in 1901, but looks like 18 (and birthplace is given as Cornwall); Nellie is 10 in 1891.

1861 census:
RG9/1546/73/1 - "Road to St Austell", St Blazey
Thomas Mynard  Head  51  Copper Miner  b Roache
Mary Mynard  Wife  50  b Lerrin
Mary A Mynard  Dau  20  Dressmaker  b St Blazey
Elizabeth J Mynard  Dau  17  Copper Ore Dresser  b Tywardreath
Joseph Mynard  Son  15  Copper Miner  b Tywardreath
Catherine Mynard  Dau  13  Scholar  b Tywardreath

Job change for Thomas, but Elizabeth with middle initial "J".

Possible sighting of Elizabeth on 1871 census (RG10/2122/131/26) as a housemaid, unmarried, aged 26 in Plymouth.
