Hi David,

Have you managed to get to the bottom of Lydia Corn/Moses Hedge?

Have just had another connection that again is of the opinion that she belonged to John & Catherine.

According to what I can find, she was born between 1802 & 1807 according to the census details and 1804 according to her death in 1883 age 79.
The other children of John & Catherine were bapt. 1804-1815 4 at Graveley, 1806-1831 9 at Toesland, Lydia ?

The only other Corn family was John's brother Stephen and they were at Alconbury.

By the way, Jemima Ray (nee Corn), no death found at all and the burial list at St.Neots gave the Ray family but not Jemima, I wonder what they did with her?

Hi Barry

Nope, I've not managed to find a christening for Lydia, but as she always gave Toseland as her birthplace I can't see how she can be anything other than the daughter of John and Catherine.

I've checked her sisters to see if she might have been baptised with a different name and was known as Lydia, but drew a blank there too. There's just about room for her to have been born in 1805, which would be consistent with most of her census ages - 44 in 1851, then 56, 66, and 76

I think it's going to be one of those situations where I'm going to have to accept that on the balance of probabilities she was the daughter of J & C. Unless of course John left a will and named her. But without exception none of my other ag labs left a will! But I haven't checked, and really ought to! Email to Huntingdon will be sent shortly

As one of her assumed brothers, Stephen, named one of his daughters Lydia I think I'm on fairly safe ground. And other researchers have included her as daughter of J & C although that's no reason for me to follow.  I specialise in refusing to follow other people's trees!

Jemima is a mystery though. Have you checked the GRO index for spelling variations - eg Rae, Rea? Could she have done a runner and Joseph described himself as widower to save face?

Regards

David

Hi David,

I hadn't added Lydia to my list of children in the first place, especially as she wasn't in my tree, but with everyone I got in contact had her down I finally gave in.

In regard to Jemima, have tried all combinations with no luck, couldn't find her for several years, will probably crop up some time on the FreeBmd, or one of the other web sites.

If there is anything in Yelling that I can help with, was given a list of BMD's and census details some time ago by James Peak and a list of Toseland census by Peter Chamberlain.
