I just wanted to add that I remember watching something on the TV and it showed the parish records for somewhere in Ireland and the priest said that families would change their religion if they received better poor relief from a particular church.

My Wheeldons were catholic and I haven't been able to trace where and why this happened, but other Wheeldon researchers hadn't come across a catholic branch before.  I have found that a lot of registrations weren't made, I think this was due to a general mistrust of the authorities as catholics endured a lot of discrimination.
