St Ninian's - Burials 1700's - Cuthell
« on: Wednesday 03 May 06 01:36 BST (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone have access to records of St Ninian's parish in 1700's and able to lookup name of Cuthell for me.  I have found christenings of Betthia, Alexander, Marian, Andrew, Catherine, James and Mary born between 1760 and 1782.  I am hoping this is the correct family for Andrew who I'm researching but cannot find any more information on siblings and would like to know if its possible they all died as infants.

Thanks
Carmel

Hi Carmel,

I've had a wee look in the pre-1855 MI Book for St. Ninian's Old and New Churchyards but unfortunately there are no listings for any Cuthell/Cuthills in either graveyard.

This of course doesn't mean that your ancestors aren't buried there - simply that there is/was no stone found actually bearing the name of Cuthell when the graveyards were transcribed back in the late sixties early seventies.

There are however, many old stones which only bear initials e.g. JC & JW, which are usually 'man and wife' (the wife's maiden name being the second set) but again unfortunately, there are none with 'A.C.'

Cuthell/Cuthill is a very common name around Stirlingshire.

Good luck in finding them!

Anne.

Thanks Anne
Do you know if there are burial registers for the period I'm interested in?  I'm hoping that there may be microfiche available for parish registers even if there were no headstones.

Hello Carmel,

Do you by any chance have a John Cuthell and Christian Morison married 9th June 1805 in Falkirk? Or Alexander Baird and Margaret/Mary Cuthell married 3rd June 1768 in Denny?

Hi Lindsay

Sorry I don't have record of Christian Morison or Alexander Baird in my files but not to say they don't fit in their somewhere.  I have quite a bit of work to do on this branch of our family as a lot are missing from IGI records.

Hello Priscilla,

I looked for your ancestors in the pre-1855 Monumental Inscriptions Book for East Stirlingshire but unfortunately there were no listings for a John Campbell or an Anne McLaren in either St. Ninian's Old or new Churchyards.

As I explained to Carmel (earlier on this same thread), there are many stones which only have either one set or two sets of initials, but again, none match with a JC and an AM (Anne would normally be listed by her maiden name). There is one however, bearing the initials J.C. but to prove that this would be John Campbell would be impossible.

Sorry!

Anne.

P.S. Presuming all of their children were born in St. Ninian's, it's probable that they stayed there, but unless you have any information to verify that, they could have moved anywhere.

Lindsay

The marriage between John Cuthell and Christian Morison appears in the Old Parish Registers for  Falkirk. All it says in the entry is 'John Cuthell and Christian Morison, both in this Parish'.
The reference is 479/9,  Frame 2507 and the date given was 9th June 1805. That could be either the Banns or the Marriage itself.

Best wishes
