Hi andras

I've tried Wem just in case they were there at the time of the 1901 but there's no sign of them anywhere :(

I think that the best thing that you could do is to try and locate the marriage of John Hughes and Mary Davies. I've had a quick look and the only one that I've found so far that has the two names listed is June quarter 1883, Oswestry, Shropshire, Volume 6a, page 1146. it's worth your having a more detailed look on the FreeBMD site or at Ancestry

The marriage cert will give their parents' names.

Hi Andras

Just to let you know that I think I've found your John Hughes family in the 1901 census - in Cheshire  ;)

RG13/3354 page 12 Cheshire - Haslington

High St (no number given)

John Hughes, 41, Farm labourer, Shropshire, Oswestry
Mary, 42, a 'do' mark put in under Shropshire then Royton (could be Ruyton XI Towns) the enumerator has then added Lancs - so will look at 1891
Edward, 17, farm labourer, Shropshire, Ellesmere
John, 16, farm labourer, Shropshire, Shrewsbury
Elizabeth, 11, Cheshire - could be Whitchurch but ??? (will have a look in 1891)
May, 8, Cheshire, Haslington
George, 5, Cheshire, Haslington
Sarah, 1, Cheshire, Haslington

PM with your e-mail for more details.
Now for the 1891.

On 1891, the same family are living in Sandbach, Cheshire:

RG12/2848 page 27 or 17  ???

Wheelock
John hughes, 30, Millers Drayman, Oswestry, Shropshire
Mary, 32, ?Weighlow, Shropshire
Edward, 8, Rednall, shropshire
John, 6, Middlewich, Cheshire
Margaret, 4, Middlewich, Cheshire
Elizabeth, 1, Sandbach, Cheshire

Although some of the places of birth vary between the two censuses, i do think that they are the same.

Ruyton XI Town is the most likely. This is half way between Oswestry and Shrewsbury - near Baschurch. Mary seems consistent with her Shropshire birth county. The only Royton that I can find on my trusty old Motoring Atlas is In Greater manchester. I can't see a Weighlow anywhere  ???
