Their middle names could be from maiden names of mother/grandmother.   I have found a few examples of this in my tree.  Mine start in 1700s and appear as late as 1920!

What century are you looking at?

Can you find any birth/marriage certs to help you?

i believe its 1800s .. i do have one wedding certificate but the only information that it gives is the two names provided in my original post ...

as far as the stewarts go anyway, Thomas Rice Stewart was born in 1879

I dont know the date for James Pitts Stewart

not much to go on is it :S ... I think after Thomas Rice was married he lived with his wife in looe street Plymouth but i dont know anything about the James Pitts Stewart

As TR Stewart was born in 1879 his birth cert. should be easy to obtain and that will give the name of his father and his mother, including her maiden name (and previous name if she was previously a widow).  Certificates can be bought through the General Register Office but you will need various details that can be found on on-line data bases such as Ancestry.

Does the marriage cert show James Pitts Stewart as TR Stewart's father?

If TR born in 1879 you should be able to find him on 1881 census, which is free on familysearch site.  This might confirm his parents for you.

Good luck,
