Easter Rising and Irish PoWs interned in Wales
« on: Thursday 04 May 06 23:46 BST (UK) »
Among the prisoners (1863 of the least dangerous who had participated in the Easter Rising) at the Frongoch Camp in Merionethshire were Michael Collins, Richard Mulcahy and Dick McKee. Others included Tomás MacCurtain (Lord Mayor of Cork 1920. Shot by RIC 20th March 1920) and Terence MacSwiney (Lord Mayor of Cork 1920). http://www.llwyfan-gogledd-cymru.com/main.asp?Language_id=2&page_no_id_2=68&category_id=10

Christopher,
Many thanks for the reference to Frongoch. We can always rely on you for these fascinating tidbits of information.
A neighbour of my dad, Michael MacRuaidhri was there. He was a great friend of Padraig Pearse. He was his gardener at the school.  He became a poet and writer in the Irish language. There is a commemorative stone and plaque there now, where he lived.
thanks again
heywood

Thanks to you too Heywood,

I was hoping for some replies regarding prisoners at Frongoch.
Lets hope a few more people have some interesting recollections of people who either worked there or were interned there. The Easter Rising, the Civil War and the 1920s formed an important part of Irish history. I was discussing this period of time with a friend yesterday. Irish history taught in schools only mentions the well known people of the time. There were thousands of others who were not mentioned like the young man (who is mentioned on one of the threads here) who trained as a surgeon, took part in the Easter Rising, and escaped to England to start a new life under an assumed name. Many women were involved too but there's only one most Irish people can name off the tip of their tongue.. Countess Markievicz who was born in London in 1868 as Constance Gore-Booth.  Her father, Sir Henry Gore-Booth was a wealthy explorer and landlord with an estate in Co. Sligo. http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/countess_markievicz.htm

Henry Dixon (1846-?) Librarian at Frongoch.

Have you read:

Frongoch - University of Revoloution by Sean O Mahony?
Published by FDR Terocanta in 1987 (no ISBN).

Frongoch was a Whisky Factory.

One of David Lloyd George's biggest problems during his premiership was giving a sop to his nonconformist supporters in Wales, having got to the top of the tree by climbing on their backs, despite the fact that he had ditched their values that he was elected on many years earlier

Turning a factory that produced the daemon drink into a prison for Papists was a bit of a coup! Despite the fact that DLlG actually saved a hated Tory Landlord  (friend) from bankruptcy by the compulsory purchase of his crap whisky plant!!!

Hi

My grandfather, Joseph James Hayes, was in Frongoch as a result of his activities. Do you have any reference to him in your book?

Many thanks.
