Johnny
I was prob given wrong dates for when he came back from frongoch as you said it closed in Dec 1916 so he came back to ireland, so this detective would have been killed after 1916. Was told this detective was well known.  Sometime after he came back he was tipped off and fled to england
Yes my grandad attended the 50th commeration and he did receive medal i think 2 but def 1. Was given a military funeral when he died.
Also here are some videos on utube about frongoch

a DMP Inspector (John Mills) was killed in 1917 but this was during a demonstration outside Liberty Hall.  Doubt he had any link to Fron Goch.

There was no sign of M Whelan amongst the names of those released early after the Rising and unfortunately I don't have a list of those who were released on amnesty in December 1916. He's not on the list of those released in June 1917 so it's likely he was in the December release.

Johnny
thank you for information.

My grandad was released from Frongoch on 24th Dec 1916.

This detective was more than a normal detective was very high up and when he was killed it made major news. Someone was caught for his murder.

Anyone who was a member of IRB whom they knew or got tip offs from the public were investigated .
There was major raids on houses. Now my grandad was tipped off and thats why he fled to england/scotland.

I have more info but will relate tomorrow I'm tired.

Hi all
Johnny
Follow up to the story re My grandad Michael Whelan

One night there was crossfire between the belfry in Dolphins Barn Church, Dublin and the Distillery in Marrowbone Lane, Dublin. Now my grandad lived very near to Dolphins Barn, Emerald Square. Michael's mother (Anne Whelan nee dwyer) was upstairs on the landing in Emerald Sq praying with her rosary beads, upon hearing all the crossfire, she was praying for Michael's safety, hoping he would not be killed. While standing on the landing praying, a bullet came through a very small side window frame not the glass but the wooden frame,  and whizz passed Anne Whelan and into the wall, she was so lucky she was not killed.

I've just recently got a copy of Uncommon Valour by Paul O'Brien which covers the battle for South Dublin Union with mention of the Marrowbone Lane outpost. Worth a read though no mention of Michael Whelan - Capt Seamus Murphy, Robert Holland, Con Colbert, Mick Liston Mick Callaghan, Josie O'Keefe, Jack Saul, Volunteer Sgt Kerrigan are mentioned out of a total garrison of approx 140 at Marrowbone.

My uncles 15 year old uncle Michael Sweeney was one of the volunteers in the South Dublin Union. Later killed at Grafton St in 1922 escaping from a Free State lorry.

By co-incidence I have 2 Whelan cousins in Dublin, both carpenters. I'll have to delve a bit into their side of the family tree.
