Dublin Metropolitan Police killed in Dublin during the Rising :

Constable James O'Brien - shot outside Dublin Castle
Constable Michael Lahiff - shot in St Stephen's Green
Constable William Frith - shot in Store St Police Station

2 members of the Royal Irish Constabulary on a training course in Dublin were involved in the assault on the South Dublin Union :

Constable Christopher Millar/Miller (stationed Belfast) and Constable Martin Meany (stationed Galway). Meany was wounded whilst Millar/Miller was killed.

No detectives listed amongst the 1916 casualties; the nearest to High Street would be Millar/Miller.

DMP detectives were first killed in 1919 :

Detective Sgt Hoey shot in Townsend St/Brunswick St
Detective Sgt John Barton shot in College Sreet (by Sean Treacy from the above picture from Tom)
Detective Sgt Patrick Smyth shot in Drumcondra

Have you a particular reference to a policeman/detective being killed on High St in 1916?

Hi johnny doyle
Thank you for your reply. Here is my story in relation to Michael Whelan. 4th battalion.
Michael Whelan my grandad spent about 1 and a half years in prison in  Frongoch and would have returned to Ireland sometime in early 1918. One of the guards in the Frongoch came over to Dublin, and must have been stationed in dublin castle with the british. He was by then a detective, but not long after he came over he was murdered on the streets of dublin. I have been told it is High Street.

A neighbour where my grandad lived in Dublin, knowing grandads history, reported him to the british. My Grandad got tipped off the police were on their way, and he scarpered that night, probably towards the docks to look for a boat to England - keeping low. They didn't catch up with him and we think my grandad spent at least two years in England. I think subsequently, they caught someone for the murder.

In relation to the guard in Frongoch above who was posted out to dublin castle as a detective, after my grandad returned home,  I dont know if maybe he was specifically keeping tabs on volunteers or not.

the detective/policeman would have been killed in 1918 or later rather than 1916 then. However, I thought that most prisoners were released in late 1916 and that Fron Goch was closed Dec 1916.

Do you know if your grandfather took part in the War of Independence/Civil War or received any of the medals etc from the period or attended any of the re-unions?

to add to the reply, M Whelan of 31 Ballybough Rd is amongst the list of the 200 deported to Knutsford on 1st May 1916 from Richmond Barracks.

Hi Johnny_Doyle

Do you have more information on Knutsford or can you tell me any sources that I can read about it?

I'm afraid I don't know much about Knutsford and the conditions/time of IRish prisoners. I believe it was a temporary holding until the prisoners were released or moved to Fron Goch.

There is a snippet in Hansard about some of the conditions that prisoners endured after arrest which might be of interest

NLI has some papers re Fron Goch and Knutsford

Very great thanks for these Johnny_Doyle.

I haven't yet had time to go through them completely but I see that amongst other things they contain the full lists of the papers of William O'Brien that I need a trip to Dublin to go and consult.

I will go through these later when I have a bit more time.

thanks again,
Sheila
