Today I was reading a report for "Healthiness of Citizens of the City of Nowich for the year 1900 By H. Cooper Pattin:
Tuberculosis, respiratory diseases like Phthisis, heart disease, Scarlet Fever, Enteric (Typhoid) Fever, Puerperal Fever, Erysipelas, Measles, Whooping Cough, Diarrhea, Rheumatic Fever, and Influenza were the main causes.

"The births of 139 illegitimate children were registered in 1900, and during the year 39 illegitimate children died under one year of age—a death rate of 285 per 1,000 births, or more than one-fourth of the number born. The percentage of infants, legitimate and illegitimate, who at the time of death were insured, was 45 per cent., a reduction of 11 from the percentage which was recorded in 1899."

I think Andy means Norwich  ;) and I think that book would be out of copyright.

and the guidelines for posting :  https://www.rootschat.com/help/posting.php  perhaps Andy could consider starting a new topic ... perhaps his ancestor was  the Medico who wrote that book that he is current reading ... perhaps he could consider asking a moderator to assist and split off his post into a new thread....

Good idea, because those are interesting data and would make for an interesting new thread.

The ONS have details of infant mortality here -

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01ng7/

“Main points
    • There were 2,651 infant deaths (deaths of those aged under 1 year) that occurred in England and Wales in 2016, compared with 2,578 in 2015 and 6,313 in 1986.
    • In 2016, the infant mortality rate increased to 3.8 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared with 3.7 in 2015.
    • Cancers remain the most common cause of death for children aged 1 to 15 years, accounting for 20.6% of deaths in 2016.
    • For babies born in 2015 with a known gestation, the lowest infant mortality rate was to babies in the White Other ethnic group at 2.2 deaths per 1,000 live births.”

Please excuse typo it should be Norwich.

I am new to Roots and trying to catch up on a wealth of old and new posts.
There are many really great old and new threads on Roots and many old topics never reached a conclusion so even if the person who originally posted the topic is no longer following, I think interesting old topics are sometimes worth a fresh look?

Mortality rates in general interests me from 19th and 20th century including adult deaths from rabies from dog bites and house fires cased by hurricane lamps and long nightdresses catching fire. These deaths were significant (especially for adults) as well as the other causes I already listed.

I have some other specific topics concerning connections to my family history that I will share soon (asking for Roots inputs) and the infant and adult mortality rates I will make a new post later.
I already posted 2 - 3 new topics connected with my family name and received valuable replies from Roots contributors.
So a big Thank You for those replies.

Best regards,
