Bristol place name?
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 18:13 BST (UK) »
Could anyone point me in the right direction to Bristol,
near Bridgend.

I found it listed as an Abode in 1863, but I cannot put my finger on exactly where it is located.

Any help appreciated.

Hi Gwerninion,

There is the city of Bristol, on the River Avon.  North Bristol is in Gloucestershire, South Bristol in Somerset.
see also: Topic: Bristol - which county?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,154361.0.html

are you sure about the county, is it really in Glamorganshire ???

If so, then Bristol is probably a transcription. error.

Looking at the Bridgend registration districts
http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/bridgend.html

it could be Bettws, maybe St. Brides (St. Brides Major, St. Brides Minor)

Hope this helps,
Bob

I'm not convinced that it is a Transcription error, firstly it's a transcription by the Glamorgan FHS, who are pretty spot on with their work.
Secondly the child who is baptised in 1866 is registered in Bridgend, and baptised at the Tabernacle Independant there.
At first I thought they might be living in Bristol GLS. but the family appear in the 51, 61 & 71 Census in and around Bridgend, so that would at first seem to rule that out.
However I 've looked back through the entries and I cannot see any other entries which say Bristol, so perhaps it is a transcript error, I expect I will need to check the original.
But thanks for you interest Berlin-Bob

Gwerninion,
I think you are right with you're Bristol.
I just googled it and it is apparently 14 miles east of Cardiff!

Thanks Bob, I didn't check on map, it just stated that Bristol, Bridgend was between Barry and Bridgend, which are both west of Cardiff!! Doh!
Perhaps it was a house name? There are a few places in Bridgend with Bristol before them.

Dear Badgirl,

Definately, positively South Wales, BRIDGEND ;D

As you said it was listed as abode then, the only thing i can think of is that that it was a house name. Bristol city is not a possibility as that would be too far out of area and i do not know of any areas in or around Bridgend known as Bristol either. Do you have any addresses at all as well as this Bristol, Bridgend??Maybe then we could see if it was a mistake by pinpointing the location they lived at as maybe it was Bryncethin, Brynmenyn, Bryntyrion etc.
