Double Takes with Surnames
« on: Tuesday 09 May 06 07:57 BST (UK) »
I've just had about six 'double takes' while looking at the index page. A particular surname (Burgess), which has had me chasing around the globe for the past five years, has cropped up in at least six subject lines.

Each time I see it, I have to read the small print to find which board it's on and go and have a read. Oh well not my lot - and then it comes up again  :o

Anyone else do double takes like this?

I've got Burgess in my line as well!

It is amazing what names seem to pop up everywhere.  Bit like Payne! ;) ;) ;)

Yes I had a close look at that html page you sent me yesterday.  Funninly enough I have always thought Burgess is a Scottish name, I don't know why!

My problem seems to be a similar one I can be
looking through census returns for one of my
ancestors and my PYE name always jumps out
even if I am not looking for it, obviously they are
always noted but it can be distressing if you want
Fletcher, Singleton, Jenkinson etc.

I've noticed as well because a great majority of my family come from a concentrated area in East Sussex, some names just seem to crop up all the time.  Burwash village in the 1850's seems to be mainly populated by Pilbeams and Eastwoods for instance.  They owned and ran everything.  Or so it seemed.

It's strange though how even rare names in my tree crop up several times... Farrer, Haley, Ward, Wood, Smith, Street, Rhodes (Infact these 2 could be sisters), Parker, Allen.

Parts of my family are often concentrated in a certain area.  I have branch from Dewsbury and it can take ages to get through because I have to write down everyone with a surname I know of who is related to that branch.  And about half of them are Crawshaws so I'm writing stuff down for ages.  I often find myself looking at topics even if it's something like Whites in Yorkshire.  I know it's extremely unlikely that I'll find an ancestor on there but I can't help myself.
