Duke of Wellington Funeral
« on: Friday 12 May 06 05:28 BST (UK) »
An elderly (95) aunt of mine believes that one of our ancestors was a pallbearer at the Duke of Wellington's funeral. She's not senile but I doubt very much that this is true.
I found three pallbearer names from a Google search: Lord Londonderry, Sir Charles Napier, and Sir Peregrine Maitland.
Anyone know the names of the others?

There were many military men at the funeral, so its possible that one of our ancestors was there, but not as a pallbearer. He may have participated in some other capacity.
Thomas Thomson, blacksmith/boilermaker, born c1820, Midlothian, married Elizabeth Glen, 1844. Children: Thomas(1844), George (1846), Alexander (1848), David (1851), James (1856), Elizabeth (1861).
Family probably from Leith, but Thomas snr worked in shipbuilding in Burntisland, Greenock, Durham, Hull, and Millwall/Poplar.
My g-grandfather is David. Family moved to Isle of Dogs 1857.
Some of family settled in Hull area.

Have you tried The Times for the report of the funeral?

There is an online pay-per-view site where you can see digital images of The Times going back to 1785 http://www.galeuk.com/times/. They occasionally offer free access for a week - I've pulled out some really fascinating reports from it.

Copies of The Times are also held in the British Library http://www.bl.uk/ though you may need to get someone to access it there.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you for The Times link.
I imagine the funeral coverage will contain the information I'm looking for.
