Crossman / Cheriton - Newton St Cyres
« on: Friday 12 May 06 12:54 BST (UK) »
Richard Crossman born about 1801 appears on the 1841 Census in Westholm, Newton St Cyres, Devon he was an Ag Lab.

He Married Fanny Cheriton, she was born about 1802.

Neither appear in the IGI, has anyone access to these parish records to look for a birth/baptism for either?

Thanks,
Tan.

Dear Tan,

Where they both born in Newton St Cyres?Do you have them on 1851 to confirm this?

I am not sure if I the RO I visit will hold the record or whether it will be in Exeter but will go and see for you.

Let me asap the info the info I have asked for.

Best Wishes

Neither appear on the 1851 Census so I can only assume they have died by then although I haven't found any record of death yet.

1841 Census just said they were both born in the same county.

Maybe there might be some more on the Original Parish marriage records than the IGI? They married 19 Feb 1821 Saint Sidwell, Exeter, Devon.

Thanks,
Tan

The original marriage record will only show their names and whether they were 'of the parish'.

I wont be able to check Exeter records. If they married there they might have been baptised there and if as Len says the Newton St Cyres records are on the IGI but no Crossmans, the chances are they werent baptised there either.

Marriages usually but not always take place in the brides parish.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

One intriguing fact:
Whilst Newton St.Cyres is on the the IGI Cheriton Bishop is not. Is it possible that we do not have Fanny Cheriton, but Fanny of Cheriton?

I was wondering where the name may have come from, a quick Google revealed they apparently originated in Devon about 1700 as 'Lords of the Manor'.

There are 49 'Cheriton's on the 1841 Census - all lived in Devon except for 4 in Hampshire and 1 in Middlesex. There are 110 on the 1901 census.

I would be surprised if they weren't all related..

Sounds like a mission waiting to be taken up!
