Mental Nurse 1901
« on: Friday 12 May 06 16:11 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, Granny Watts, is listed in 1901 census as a mental nurse at Laverstock Asylum, Salisbury.

She is listed directly below the matron, and way above others listed as asylum attendants. She was 32 and still unmarried at the time.

This leads me to suspect that she may have recieved some kind of recognised training for her role and was wondering if she would have been registered or part of some nursing federation.

She was also from quite a middle class family, her father the school master and her mother a school mistress, and her siblings were teachers and police officers. Granny later married one of the attendants at the asylum, who went on to become the manager of a coffee public house.
