Hello Janette,

I had another trawl through the films at Morpeth Library (Woodhorn opens 1st November), and I found the following:

Longbenton St. Bartholomew

Entry 1992 on 22 August 1841
William Gibbison, (parents) Joseph & Violet Tate, (abode) Long Benton, (occupation) hind.

Entry 2190 on 16 April 1843
Edward, Joseph & Violet Tate, Long Benton, hind.

Entry 279 on 14 March 1847
Joseph, Joseph & Violet Tate, Scrog House, hind.
The following sentence was written underneath but I had trouble deciphering a word; "According to the certificate of marinitted to me on the 15th day of March 1847".

Wallsend St. Peter

Entry 2197 on 13 April 1851
Oswald son of, Joseph & Violet Tate, Willington, labourer.

I would have expected to find your John Tate as well, but I noticed that the records for 1845 started in February 1845 (change of film), so it is possible that January 1845 was missed.  I did not find any of their later children baptised at Longbenton or Wallsend.  Earsdon was looked at again while I was hunting for my own relatives, but I saw no Tate family other than from a previous post.

Regards,

John

Hi John

A big Thank you for taking your time to have a search for me while looking through for your own family.

The information has certainly filled in a few gaps for me.

Janette :)

In an effort to learn more about James Henry Gray Dixon who deserted his wife and family, or so it seems, in the 1890's, I have been digging into his family life and ancestry.

What I have learned is that he was born and grew up in Heworth, Gateshead and his father was John Dixon from Hartley near Blyth.    Judging by other census returns in Family Search and UK Census on line, it is fairly clear that John's mother was Margaret Dixon who sometimes gives her place of birth as Hartley, but in some census as Earsdon.       Whilst Margaret Dixon is easy to find in each census, her husband whom I think was James Dixon is quite elusive.

The Genuki list of marriages for Earsdon on line only goes up to 1837, but there is one there that looks promising - James Dixon to Margaret Gray on 28th May, 1837.  That would explain where the 'Gray' came from in James Henry Gray Dixon's name.      However the James Dixon I found in Heworth appears to have been born around 1823 which would make him only 14 when married.   Obviously I've got something wrong.    According to FreeBMD there was a marriage of a Margaret Bates to a James Dixon in Tynemouth district in the December qtr of 1838, but that isn't much better.
