Wortley Arms, Wortley. Any history of publicans/families?
« on: Friday 12 May 06 21:10 BST (UK) »
Dear all,

I have just found in the 1891 census one of my ancestors - THORNTON STRINGER, (born 1839) was the "Landlord" of the "The Wortley Arms", Wortley.

By 1901, he and his family are back in Huddersfield and I wondered if there is anywhere I can locate information as to how long he was at the pub for?

I can't seem to locate a trade directory for that area at that time.

Many thanks for ANY help.

Debbie

Hello the Wortley Arms in the village of Wortley is part of the Earl of Wharncliffe's estate. It has always been owned by the family who inherited it from the Rockingham family. Barnsley Library may have information about the pub.
