Wasn't there someone on Absolutely Fabulous who was called Edie? Does anyone know what that was short for?

But I also know an Eden who is known as Edie. She's not yet two though, it's a bit more of a modern name than one you will find amongst your ancestors.

Maybe not so modern. I have 2 Edens in my tree, born 1839 and 1879. :)

Jennifer Saunders' character was Eddie, short for Edina, although I do remember one episode where her mother revealed she had named her Edwina, and Eddie changed it.

skb - wow! I never knew it was in use back then. I keep telling my husband (who only likes "classical" names) that some of the more "modern" ones are actually ancient. He would like to use Dawn (his mother's middle name) if we ever have a daughter and I LOVE the name Aurora. I keep telling him it's an ancient name, means the same thing, and has been used throughout history. He still insists it's some weird hippy thing, though  >:(

We do both like Edie though! Edie Aurora, whaddya think?  ;D Or even better - Eden Aurora - Heavenly Sunrise. Oooooh, yes!

Kez :)

According to http://www.geocities.com/edgarbook/names/e/edith.html  Edie is a dimunitive of Edith

PS for Aurora  (the Roman Latin name for a goddess of the dawn).

Gender: Feminine
Language: English, German
Etymology:

History:
Aurora, a Roman mythological name, was not used as a name during its own time. However, it was revived in England, Germany, France after the Renaissance, when “classical” names and ideas were trendy. Aurora can often be found in poetry of the time.

Aurora became a little more common after after publication of Elizabeth Barret Browning’s Aurora Leigh in 1856. It became a little more common still in the 1890s thanks to Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty with the princess named Aurora.
