According to my Dictionary of First Names Minnie is the pet form of Wilhelmina and at its peak in the second half of the 19th century.

However Minnie was also used as a name in its own right - I had an aunt named Minnie born 1901 - and her name wasn't a pet-form of anything else.

I don't know whether it's a 'Scottish' thing, but I've known of quite a few 'Minnies' who were all christened Marion.

The book I have says that Minnie was also a Scottish pet form of Mary.

Can't say I'd heard or found that before  :-\

Hi, my greatgrandmother was known as Minnie but her real name was Mary as well so don't know if that means anything. One of my other greatgrandmothers was called Granny, (even by her husband!) but that's another story.
