McGrath and Rolfe Help
« on: Saturday 13 May 06 15:25 BST (UK) »
Hi All I'm new to this board, I'm currently looking up my family tree but I am coming to a dead end all roads.
I am interested in finding decendants/ ancestors of John Mcgrath, Born in Ireland in 1862. I have no idea when he moved to England but I do know he married Elizabeth Buckenham born 1863 in Norfolk. Their address in 1901  20 Lees Yard Nottinghamshire. They seemed to have moved around  a bit  as they their children seem to be born in different counties.

Catherine  -  1885 - ??

Thomas - 1888 - Nottingham

Charles  - 1891 - London

Arthur - 1896 - Nottingham

William  - 1899 - Nottingham

Catherine McGrath was my G Grandmother, all I know about her was that she was a fortune teller at the Goosefair. She married Walter Rolfe Sr born 1882 Nottingham. The info I have on him is that in 1901 he was a Lace Hand, and lived at 124 Radford Rd Nottingham. Died Before 1948. (1917 WW1 PTE,353rd(H&S)Labour Company?????)

They had a number of childern 1 of which was my Grandfather Walter Rolfe jr born 1912. I believe that he was once married before my grandmother. His first marriage was in Nottingham and some of his children still live there.

There is also a Norfolk Link, Walter Rolfe Sr's father was Alfred Rolfe born 1847 in Stoke Ferry Norfolk. In 1881 Alfred was living at 25 Pelican St Radford. In 1901  he was a Tailor who worked from home. His Address was 142 Radford Rd Nottingham and he was Widowed.

Alfred's father was John Rolfe born 1805 in Fincham Norfolk and his mother Mary ? born 1809. There address in 1861 was 22 Lime Kiln Cottage Swaffham. John was a Lime Burner.

This is as far as I can get, I have had this for a while. If anyone thinks they might have any info on any of the people here I would be very greatful to here from you.

Thank you for your time.

Hi Aingie,

Welcome to RootsChat  8)

I'm not sure this is much help but I can spot the McGrath family in 1891 as follows:
RG12/48 135 25
Fulham, London
Estcourt? Road

John McGrath, head, 30, G labourer, b. Ireland
Cathne, wife, 29, b. Norfolk Marham
Elizth, dau, 5, b. Leicester
Thos, son, 3, b. Notts Beeston
Eleanor, dau, 1, b. Fulham

Elizabeth's birthplace matches with that of Catherine in 1901 - Leicester. I suppose these 2 are one and the same.

Hi Tati
Thank you for this, I am thinking that maybe Elizabeth and Cathrine have been mixed up at some point. Elizabeth is the wife and Catherine the daughter not the other way round.

Thanks Aingeal

This is your Alfred Rolfe. Both he and Arthur moved to Nottingham to look for work. Arthur is my husbands  Great Grandfather. I have a photograph of him and his wife Elizabeth Clara if you are interested. My father-in-law (1915-2005) lived with his grandparents for a few years. Arthur was sexton at the church (St Annes in Nottingham I think) and also a school caretaker. They had four children:

John William Rolfe birn circa 1895 - died 23/3/1918 in the 1st World War aged 23. Remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Arthur James Rolfe born circa 1890

Elizabeth Rolfe born circa 1883

Mary A L Rolfe born circa1885

I might be telling you something you have found out since your posting in May. I would be interested to hear if you've found out anything else about Arthur and Alfreds family.
Rolfe - Norfolk. Wright - Nottingham. Elliott - Leics/Nottingham. Pritchard - West Hartlepool. Fowler - Nottingham. Keetons - Chesterfield area.

Hi there

I know its a long time since you posted on this subject but I am clutching at straws really as I cannot get past my grandfather in researching my family history.I know that my side of the Rolfe family moved from the main section of the Rolfe family that lived in Radford Nottingham about 1930 to live on Beckley Road Broxtowe when the council estate was built there.I am not even sure of my grandfathers first name but we think it was Frederick and he married my Grandmother Lily Hawkridge, not sure when and had 6 children,Robert,Doris,George,Joan,Ken and my father Dennis(Ken and Dennis were identical twins) and were born in 1926 to 1928.My Grandfather was much older(possibly20years older) than my Grandmother as he died around 1946/47 at the age of 65ish.Does any of the above ring any bells with your research.I thankyou in advance and also apologies if none of it makes sense.

Kevin

Welcome to RootsChat Kevin  :)

I can confirm granddad's name:

Marriage Jun 1916 Nottingham 7b 691
Frederick E Rolfe - Lily Hawkridge

Possible death:
Mar 1946 Nottingham 7b 424
Frederick E Rolfe age 68

The births of Denis and Kenneth Rolfe, mother's maiden name Hawkridge, were registered in Sep 1925 Nottingham.

If you purchase the Rolfe/Hawkridge marriage cert (£7 from the GRO), it would (hopefully) show Frederick and Lily's father's names.

In the meantime, this seems to be a likely birth:
Frederick Edward Rolfe
Dec 1877 Nottingham 7b 292
