Can anyone see him in any of the earlier censuses, please?
I think he was born in 1805 and he definitely married Mary Shand in Sep 1840 in Liverpool. They had one daughter, as far as I know - Mary (Reid Shand) Ralph who was born in April 1841 either at sea or in Stepney, London!!

Hi, you're in luck I think, there is a William Nicol Ralph on the IGI parents James and Mary who was born 13 April 1805 baptised 10 May 1805 at Swallow Street Scotch Church, Westminster plus quite a few siblings, some with quite unusual names.
