convents

I wondered what happened in the case of the sisters in a convent during the census years? I suppose they would have to counted, but what name would they have to give? Their birth name or their convent name? Would it be easy to trace someone ?

Hi Sushi

If you are lucky, they will be under their birth name.  A Rootschatter found one of mine, who became an Anglican nun, in a convent, and she was listed under her birth name, as also the others seemed to be.

Try searching that way, for starters!

Oh Ok! so I will try the census first. Her name was Adelaide Harris. I know she was born in 1867 Halesowen, and was last heard of in 1896. So thats a start anyway.
 Thanks MarieC !

Sushi

Have you had any luck finding your person?

I remembered that someone found another rellie of mine who was a RC nun in a convent, under her birth name, so it must have been a fairly common practice!

I haven't had any luck yet Marie, and I'm beginning to think we have the wrong sister. Her siblings were Mary Maria Harris b. 1870 Halesowen, and Edith E Harris b.1883 Barrow in Furness. So perhaps it was one of those who entered the convent? The family tree doesn't say they were ever married, but who knows. Perhaps it will just remain a mystery!
Thanks for your interest anyway,

Bad luck, Sushi!!

Keep looking for all three - maybe they will turn up, mistranscribed or something!

If by chance she was counted under a religious name, it will be almost impossible to find her.  I hope not!  As I said, it hasn't been my experience...
