Where was this photo taken??
« on: Tuesday 16 May 06 23:44 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Apologies for putting this photo up twice - I did post it on the Canadian board - but might be USA - or really anywhere!!

Seems such a large monument that someone would remember seeing it  - hopefully!!

Cheers

Keith

Sadly Keith neither do I,

but I was wondering if it could be New York as the building behind is tall and they probably had the first tall ones, in keeping with the dress of the men in the photo ???

Hope someone picks this one up who has an answer

Hi Keith,

Above the heads of the men there appears to be a shield with, possibly, some lines of

words. Would a scan of greater definition reveal the content?

Also, looking at the carved figures visible to the left and right, each side of this monument looks different from the one we see.

I get a feeling of celebration. Could it be from something like a World Fair Site?

Hi Beth,

I only received the photos last night - have already asked for an improved scan - I bet he wishes he hadn't sent them to me!!  ;D ;D

Like your idea of World Fair type - will have another search - I suppose it might not be around now - think this was taken 1925-1935.

Cheers

Hi Keith
I have just had my Magnifying glass on your photo, and it looks to me like some sort of memorial to settles probably The U.S or Canada or how about Australia ???.If you look on the right side of the monument you will see that the man sitting in the forground has a beard and some sort of working gear on.The younger man standing up behind him has an old fashioned cap on.Which looks very American style, he has his right arm raised and is holding what looks like some sort of fire torch or tube.On the left side (Cant see the photo from here :) the man seems to be sitting on a chair. He is wearing what looks like a Leather Apron,i cant make out what he is holding. Standing next to him on his right you can just see the top of a ladies head with a mop cap on ,think thats what they were called.Like the ones worn by kitchen staff in England in the 1800 . Can you turn the picture round so i can see the back view ;D

CeliaJust had another look it cant be a black beard on a stone statue can it, silly me ::)

Hi Keith,

I had this reply from a friend....

I don’t know the location of the shot though it does seem hauntingly familiar…I do know why someone suggested Niagara Falls though. It closely resembles the monuments that buttress the bridge on the Q.E.W that you traverse as you approach…or depart for that matter…St. Catherine’s when heading to or from Niagara Falls
