Hi Karen

Back again while husband and 7 yr old daughter have some quality time together before she goes to bed.

Thanks for all the links, lots of pre-bedtime reading for me tonight!

Could I ask how you 'linked' Joseph Longhurst to the 'Petworth Project'?

I've used Google to find ships lists but get stuck at the 1ft step because I had no emigration date, departure or arrival port or ship details and was getting nowhere.

This is only the 2nd time I've got a Canadian branch to my tree, the other one was so much easier to trace as I knew where and when the family went and found their details quick easily.

Hi Karen

Just thought I would let you know I've found out a lot more overnight.

I had posted a message on another board and I got sent a link to a Longhurst tree that goes back to 1515, not just the children I was looking for!

Sort of put's an end to this bit of research for the time being.

Great Dawn,

Were these the right Longhurst? And any mention of your Cheesman?

Hi Karen

Yes these are 'my' Longhursts if at some point I can prove baptisms link Joseph to Walter Longhurst as brothers as Walter is my GGGG-GF. It's highly likely they are.

The Cheesman saga goes on. How far back does your Shorter/Cheesman research go? The info I've been sent takes me back to 1515!

I have been contacted by a Longhurst in Canada who has put together huge amounts of data - family trees, historical gleanings, etc. and more on the Petworth Emigration Project. The death of George in 1924 that you posted the other day is amongst this data.

They are open to my suggestion of the Cheesman theory. There are no baptisms in Surrey of any Hosmars/Hasmers. Hosmars appear in Kent though. As does another Capel also. And there is a baptism in Capel, Surrey that would fit perfectly and give this other researcher Sarah's parentage and siblings. I'm still convinced that I have a plausible theory. Maybe time will never tell.

Good of you to keep in touch.

If anything happens I'll let you know.

Hi  I know this isn't what you were are looking for initially but it is the Longhursts in the area that you were looking at I think are part of your lot too.  Any update on any of this would be great.  I have information about them in Ewhurst which I can also send.  I knew there was someone in Canada had a lot of information on them but I couldn't track her down.

Kia ora

(My brother lives in Wellington)

Thanks your your reply. This topic was started a long time ago and a lot of research has taken place since.

Firstly I am connected to this family and I did some collaboration with Cam Longhurst in Canada. It would seem from memory that all Longhursts in  Canada now are distantly related and can trace back to the Petworth Emigration scheme.

However far I take my tree and other Longhurst trees back, I still come to the time in history of the English Civil War and Commonwealth period where no entries exist in parish registers and some trees are compiled based on unproven assumptions.

So there are trees online which start in the 1500's and work forward, there's a big jump in the 1600's and they end up today. Most trees online seem to have been copied and copied.

I registered the Longhurst name last year with the Guild of One Names Studies and I'm now going through all my research to put it online. I know there are many Longhurst families out there but most have their origins in Surrey, Sussex and Kent. The fact that the surname appears in  the earliest surviving parish registers suggests the families were well established before the 1500's. The Guild though is not primarily there for tree research, that happens after all sources of the surname around the world are collected.

So, I am interested in your family history and your link to our tree so I can make sure I have made the right connections. If you want to correspond off-forum, I can send my email address to you on the personal message system.
