What's your SHORTEST branch?
« on: Wednesday 17 May 06 12:09 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm sure it's been done before but....

What is the shortest direct branch in your family tree?

I have all my direct lines almost to 1800, 1700, 1600 (in some cases) but my "Short" line is one Great Grandfather born c. 1835.

I'm sure many people have done better - but wouldn't it be great if we could all get to, say 1700's, on all direct branches.

Di

Probably my paternal Maynard line - it only goes back to my Great Grandfather James Frank Maynard, who was born in 1908.

Hi Susan,

You wouldn't be looking for Urwin family around Morpeth/Bedlington (and sometimes in Durham), would you - coal miners??

I gave up looking for one branch when I got back to about 1860 to find that William White born Dorset (scores of them !!) b 1835 or could be 1825 or1830 depending on which census he actually remembered his  date of birth and where he was born Whitchurch ? charmouth ? or plain Dorset ,married a Margaret Brown ,similar story with d.o.b , of Scotland ,Dumfries or Edinburgh.

"ENOUGH" I said after a while and have now given up...........for the time being of course.

A set of gt grandparents, John Howard and Ellen Viney.........can not find their marriage anywhere; even asked rootschatters.  Have his death cert. only;  can't even find them with baby (my grandfather) on 1901 census.  Guess they were just living together and hiding from census enumerator out of shame! It's that or aliens.

Isn't it a shame that we are all having a problem with a Great grandparent - it's so recent, with census details etc available.

By the way Nanny Jan - I FINALLY found one of my guys on the 1901 census under a totally different name (mistranscribed). I searched dozens  and dozens of first names with approx date of birth only - found it but it was annoying.

Hi Di

I have Urwins in Bywell with marriage connections in Ovingham and Rothbury.  William Urwin born around 1800 (haven't tracked him down yet) was a ferryboatman.  His son John b.1821 was a miner.  They moved south to Leadgate (Durham) in the late 1840's.  If you think you have a connetion PM me.
