I think you have read the bride's name Tomkin

I was trying to make out the name of the mother of the groom. Father's name is Peter Burns (deceased) and the mother is Agnes Burns M.S. ?

Hi Carol,
I had already apologised but my posting went astray.
That comes from rushing and doing too many jobs at the same time.
( after this I going for a lie down) What i meant to say is
Mrs. (I or S ) Hilson.  I'll give my eyes a rest and look at it again tomorrow.
Regards,
Tomkin

Hi Carol,
Just had another look. Are the entries the maiden names.
i.e Miss Hilson, married name Agnes Burns?
The same format occurs several times

Carol,

I don't believe that it is possible to say for certain whether
it is HILSON or NILSON.

The Registrar's upper case 'H' is very very variable and
there does not seem to be an upper case 'N' to compare
it with.

The doubtful letter is almost exactly like the 'H' in Horsburgh
in the same column in the entry for Elizabeth HORSBURGH
- but nothing at all like the 'H' in Hutton which occurs several
times ...

Looking at the IGI and also FreeCEN, HILSON seems to occur
quite often in Roxburghshire, NILSON (or variant) uncommon.

Incidentally, although FreeCEN indicates that in 1841
Roxburghshire is 97.1% complete (only Teviothead missing),
I cannot find Isabell HILSON - do you have the full entry for
the family?

The main problem seems to be that most of the events which
might be relevant occurred before the start of Statutory
Registration (1855) in Scotland - or happened later in England
where the pertinent information is not included on certificates.

It might be worthwhile getting the church register image of
the birth/christening of William WALLACE to see what you
yourself make of the mother's name ...

Do you have the family in 1851?  Perhaps you could post
this information?

Hi Jap,
Can you look to see if there is an Agnes Hilson at any time?

Hi Jap

Someone found the family for me in 1851 in Scotland but in 1841 they are in Northumberland

Agnes is down as Agnes Wallace along with her husband John Wallace (b abt 1812 in Northumberland) and her son John Wallace b 1840 (aged 10mths and born in Northumberland)

In 1851 they were in Heaton or Heiton I think it says and she is widowed with three sons and one lodger (who is the father of hugh)

Agnes is 37 sons John (born Northumberland) aged 10, James (born Northumberland ) aged 7 and William (Born Eckford) aged 4

I don't know whether she married John Wallace in England or Scotland so it might be worth a search for that before I go any further
