1891 CENSUS REQUEST, GLOUCESTER-ISH, JAMES
« on: Saturday 07 February 04 23:47 GMT (UK) »
Looking for info on William James aged 25.  He lived in Westbury-on-Trym but travelled in his job as a bricklayer.  The rest of the family are on the census in Westbury but he isn't.  It could be that he is working somewhere near (next county).  I know that this is a difficult one but I need to find his place of birth - believed to be London area.

There are 3,108 William James in the 1891 census and 40 of them were aged 25 years.

6 of those 40 are shown as being born in London or its suburbs –
1 is a servant
1 is a Gen Labourer with his wife Eliza (shirt maker) – he was born Bermondsey, London
1 is a Timber Merchant
1 is a Visitor to London
2 are Sons – but they are out as you said he was not at home

Without going into all the files to see who was a bricklayer – where do I go from here.

Thanks for trying.  William James was my maternal grandfather and I need his birth certificate to progress further on that line.

The 1901 census gives his birthplace as "London" but I was hoping to narrow it down a bit.  I'll have to start applying for birth certificates of all those "William James".

Hi Denben

In previous postings you say:

If the rest of his family are in Westbury - does that not list either of his parents.  Have you checked the 1881 census for him aged 15 with members of that family listed in Westbury?

When I said the rest of the family, I meant his wife's family.
Perhaps you could have a look at that family for me - I've only looked at the index to the 1891.

They lived with his wife's grandparents, Isaac Cotterell and Mary ann Cotterell both aged 69, of Westbury-on-Trym.

Yes, thanks.  Replied on that thread.

I'm off to Worcester on Thursday to do some research.
