John Bryan and family of Llanfyllin
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 11:05 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find a family of BRYANs who lived in LLANFYLLIN in the 1700's? In all the records I have John Bryan states that he was born in Llanfyllin in 1776, despite years of looking in records (both parish and non conformist) I (and others) have never been able to find a record.
His parents were JOHN BRYAN (taw draper) and FRANCES SIMS -we have a marriage bond for the couple in Llanfyllin Dec1774, but again no record of the marriage.
The parents moved to Oswestry where they are both buried (actually got details of this)
We have been stuck on this one for years and would really appreciate any help to get back further.
Bryan - Caernarfon,  Mid Wales, Shropshire
Davies - Amlwch - Anglesey and Caernarfon
Elcox -  Kington - Herefordshire and S.Wales ,
Hodges - Dymock - Gloucestershire and S.Wales
Pope - Tenbury Wells - Worcestershire, Hope Bagot -Shropshire
Morvan - Herefordshire
Levy - Aldgate, Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Hackney, Holland
Wywiecki/Wiewiecki - Belchatow - Poland, East London

Thanks for replying Peter,
I have everything documented on census (1841 - through)and BMD records, just nothing on the topics I mentioned - his birth/baptismal record, parents marriage and of course anything else about the family in Llanfyllin in the 1700's.

LLanfyllin is in Montgomeryshire, not Mereioneth, you may get a better response by posting on the Montgomeryshire list!

John Bryan of LLanfyllin is one of the most famous of Weslean Preachers from Wales.

Have a look at the Welsh Biography on Line Site:

http://yba.llgc.org.uk/

(Select English or Welsh and key in the name)

John Bryan Seems to be a "popular" ancestor, I have replied to a number of searches for him. He is worth Googling for!

Diolch yn fawr, Dolgellau, already posted on Montgomeryshire - but have had more replies on here! I also Google him about once a month to see if anything else has come up :)

Even the information in the Welsh biography is wrong having his birth date as 1770. This was due to a misread of the dates in his diary by William Davies in 'John Bryan a'i amserau'. His actual date was 1776.

I already have copies of the diarys that he wrote when he started out on his mission to bring Wesleyanism to the Welsh in their own language and just about everything that has been ever written about him, or by him in English and in Welsh - he is my 3xggrandfather.

The only missing link is a record of his birth and more information on his parents, so I can get further back with this, the paternal line in my tree (got all the maternals back to the 15 and 1600's).

Thanks for replying and the link.
