definitely the whole package.................

i guess i'm just nosy, but as soon as i discover siblings i want to find out what happened to them....

i also agree with the fact that if you hit aa brick wall..., some of them i'm sure are double layered

then i follow someone else in family and often can push out the odd brick or two.
am also doing both sides of tree, mine and hubby and as we are both suffolk born and bred whats the betting i find a link somewhere ;D ;D

Gadget - 3rd cousin 1 x removed should be fun especially if you find her husband is related.

You won't believe this - or maybe you will  :) but I've been trying to make contact with 'Aunty Polly's ' line for a couple of years. My grt grandmother had two illegitimate children, two years apart. I gather (though will never know) that it was the same father. Aunty Polly went into service near Manchester in the late 1870s and married there in 1884. She had four children.  Been looking for ages.
Then I sent some stuff to another cousin who chased the surname up on GR (I ducked out of GR a while ago) and up pops this grt granddaughter. Now the family all stayed in the Machester area and never returned to North Wales, not even for the funeral of grt grandmother.
BUT WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT
Grt granddaughter happens to be married to someone whose grandmother was born in the village that we were all born and grew up in :o :o :o

I'm a bit half and half.  I don't research families too deeply, if they are not related to me, for example I don't order certs for them but if the census material is easy to locate then I will include their family in order to obtain a broader picture of my ancestors lives.

I do think it is important to branch out a little further even though these families aren't directly related to yourself.  Their descendants could have photos, family bibles etc of your ancestors.

What is the secret of your success?  Have you visited the areas in person and gone through the local records one by one?

I live in Lancashire which is were the majority
of ancestors came from.

I find most villages have local history society it
just my townies I have difficulty with.

I have been to the Local Record Office and found
wills, and then sent of for them, also Parish
Registers.

I have visited Churches and their Graveyards.

The local census is available at the town Library
but I have now purchased ALL Census for
Lancashire so I can expand.

I have also been lucky and found people that are
interested in the same Families and have helped
me along the way, checking my direct line.

Jinks,

You're so lucky to live in the same area where you are doing most of your research!  ; )

If I found the death date of an ancestor and wanted to find out if s/he had a will, would the local record office have an index or does it vary?  Can people order copies by mail or do you always have to go in person?

I don't know of anyone researching any of my families!  Perhaps when I am able to post my info online, I might hear from other descendants:  at least that's my hope!

Thanks!

I'm a "Completist" doing something that will never be complete!!

I trace all siblings and descendants but don't trace the ancestry of the "married ins!"

However, I've just realised that some of my second cousins and I are also 6th cousins, so I now have their line as well!

Had a family reunion about a month ago, most of the attendees were from my 4th cousins line, but that turned up photographs from the 1860's of my ggrandmothers siblings, so well worth it.

And if anyone ever finds out what happened to Tabitha Spragg born 1790, please let me know (yes, I get sidetracked by interesting names as well!!)

Lancashire Record Office based in Preston
certainly has an Index of Lancashire Wills and
the Lancashire Will Book (you are not allowed
to photocopy) but I decided to order a rather long
Will (the Record Office will have the address of
the relevant place).

I have had no need to go further a field YET!!
So I cannot comment on other Record Offices.

I play the hokey cokey with mine

Left leg in Left leg out quickly ... when I am hitting brickwalls... then whole self in whole self out when I get great leads .........then hit the brickwall!

It oh so depends on time at the end of the day and lets face it our ancestors aren't going anywhere so we can dip in and out as we wish.
