Not so 'Smart'
« on: Saturday 20 May 06 21:37 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can help me here?
On this 1891 England census i have my grandfather JOHN SMART as a Railway Porter together with sisters,,Florence & Lydia and brother William. Above Florence are 2 Katherines. One  is John's elder sister and i know hs mother was named Katherine also.

But ---i'm confused because Katherine E Smart [John's sister]has the name Oakley in the same space as well as Smart and the 1st Katherine has a surname i can't read atall.

Positive i've got my family but can't figure out the 'Oakley ' bit and the fact that 'mum' now appears to have a different surname.

Any ideas about the name changes please?? Poli  ???

Hi Poli,

I think the sister is called Smart, and the 'Oakley' belongs to mother Catherine: her name would be Katherine Rodin Oakley. Was she a widow and remarried?

Look at this:

Marriage September quarter 1885
Catherine Rhoda Smart - George James Oakley
Pancras 1b 88

with a possible death for her husband:
December quarter 1884
John Smart age 47
Pancras 1b 117

Tati, many, many thanks.
Yes a 2nd marriage seems the answer. My Gt. Grandfather was called John [her 1st husband] and now i have a death date  also.

I've only just started on the 'Smarts' i decided to leave my Welsh lot for a while as i'm getting to the sticky bits, pre census!!!

Thought i'd give the Smarts a go and hit a hurdle straight away but thanks to you i can set off down the next bit  ;D Poli

In 1901, Catherine R Oakley is living with her widowed son-in-law Herbert Woods. The youngest son, Harold T Woods, is aged 1.
It seems Herbert Woods was Katherine's husband: I can see this:
June quarter 1899
Hendon registration district:
Birth Harold Totterdell Woods - 3a 268
Death Katherine Elizabeth Woods - age 29 - 3a 135

Tanja  :)

(I now also see the marriage: Catherine Elizabeth Smart - Herbert De Lina Woods, March 1892 Pancras 1b 87)

Tati. where are you getting all this from!!!

So mother and daughter married father and son,

My grandfather's 2nd name was Totterdell, i see that has been passed on to the nephew. I assume 'Totterdell' will surface further back down the Smart line somewhere or other.

I could of course, leave you with my Smarts and pop off back to Wales!!!!! ;) ;)

Sorry Poli - did I spoil the fun?  :-[  :-[  :-[

I don't think they 2 women married father and son. Catherine Oakley was Herbert Woods' mother-in-law because her daughter married him, that should be all, I think.
