Foords/Fords of Ninfield and Westham
« on: Sunday 21 May 06 00:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to determine whether there is a link between the Foord families of Ninfield and Westham.  I know little about the Ninfield Foords.  Thomas Foord m Lydia Beeching and amongst their offspring were James Foord.  James took part in the Battle of Sidley Green and was transported to Australia.  James was married to Hannah Milham.

My line starts with William and Elizabeth Foord.  William died in 1819 in Westham.  I have no record of William's birth or marriage.  William and Elizabeth had 9 children, one of whom was Orpah Foord (my direct line is through Edward Foord, a son of William and Elizabeth).  Orpah Foord married Samuel Banks in 1823 and died in 1830.  Samuel remarried in 1836, to Hannah Milham (the widow of James Foord).  It would seem coincidental that Samuel Banks had links to two independent Foord families.  Perhaps Orpah Foord was in some way related to James Foord.

Does anybody have any information that may link the Foords of Ninfield and Westham?

Regards

The burials list covers June 1878 to March 1931

I hope that some of these names might help you. I wonder what the two who died on the same day died of. Looking at the plan they are buried right by a couple of my Pook relatives. When I have time later in the week I'll look at some photos to see if your potential realtives are included in them.

I'd better get down to what I should really be doing. I'm far too easily distracted!

Best wishes

Hi Brigcs,
Many thanks for the information.  Unfortunately, none of these people can be linked to my Foords of Westham.  The information was most useful nonetheless.  I can link almost all of the people to their families:

Mary Ann Ford burial Ninfield 22nd March 1880 aged 56

Florence Maria Ford burial Ninfield 15th July 1881 aged 3
Daughter of Alfred and Louisa Ford

Caroline Elizabeth Ford burial Ninfield 6th Jan 1884 aged 14
Daughter of Tilden and Sarah Ford

Henry Ford burial Ninfield 3rd April 1884 aged 76
Husband of Sarah Ford.
It is possible that this is the Henry Foord that was involved in the smuggling that lead to the Battle of Sidley Green

Sarah Harriet Ford burial Ninfield 14th Aug 1884 aged 20
Daughter of Tilden and Sarah Ford

James Foord (living Ore, Hastings) buried Ninfield 4th Apr 1896 aged 78

George Foord, buried Ninfield 23 Apr 1897 aged 85
Harriett Foord buried Ninfield 23rd Apr 1897 aged 85

George Foord was born in about 1819 in Sedlescombe and died in Jun Q 1897 in Hailsham District.
Harriett Foord was born in about 1812 in Ninfield and died in Jun Q 1897 in Hailsham District.
Harriett was previously married to William Duke.

Rhoda Ford living in Hailsham, buried Ninfield July 1900 aged 79

Thomas Ford, living Moons Hill, buried Ninfield 15th July 1904 aged 78
Husband of Rosa Ford

William Ford, The Green, Buried Ninfield, 9th Mar 1907 aged 62
Husband of Ellen Ford.  Son of Henry and Sarah Ford.

Louisa Edith Ford, living Beaconsfiled Terrace, Bexhill, buried Ninfield 2nd Feb 1909, aged 60
Wife of Alfred Ford.  Mother of Elsie Ford

Elsie Lilian Ford, Bexhill, buried Ninfield 7th July 1915, aged 26
Daughter of Alfred and Louisa Ford

James Ford, buried Ninfield21st July 1917, aged 85
Father of Eliza Foord.  Husband of Elizabeth Foord.  Son of Henry and Sarah Ford.

Alfred Ford, lived 155, Station Rd, Bexhill, buried Ninfield 21st June 1917, aged 72
Husband of Louisa Ford.  Father of Elsie Lillian Ford.  Son of Henry and Sarah Foord.

Eliza Foord, late Ninfield, living at 40, Frederick Rd, Hastings, buried 19th Apr 1926 aged 64
Daughter of James Ford

Too early but may be connected. Samual Banks had a daughter Charlotte in 1851 Census says she was deaf and dumb. They were all living at Vicarage House Pevensey.Hannah a laundress. Samuel an Ag Lab. Do you know how old William was when he died 1819? Sorry no definite connections, will contact you if anything else appears. In early Jan 1828, the Little Common Gang were indulging in the fine old Sussex art of smuggling when a group of blockademen  tried to intercept them.  In the ensuing melee, a Quartermaster from HMS Hyperion, fell dead.  Several of the smugglers were captured and tried at the Old Bailey.  They were sentenced to death but the sentence was commuted to Transportation to Australia.

A far better description of the events can be found at http://www.whenham.net.

Click on the link for Sidley Green.

Some more information can be found under reference code HASMG.46 (Smuggling on the Sussex Coast) on www.a2a.org.uk.

Details of the trial can be found at the Old Bailey website

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_units/1820s/t18280410-3.html

It took just over 3 months to go from the incident to the trial.

Hi Mark

I'm a descendant of James Foord's eldest son, John Ford(1816 - 1901) - and most (if not all) of John's descendants live in Australia.

In 1997, two very distant family members produced a family history, FORDing the Generations - but I only collected a copy of it last week (because I've only recently returned to the area where most of the family lives).

The family researchers have done a brilliant job - and, even though some early siblings are referred to and followed to a degree, James is the only offspring of Thomas and Lydia whose story is outlined.

My great grandmother was James Foord's grand-daughter - so the Ford surname disappeared from my family fairly early.

The preface to FORDing the Generations indicates that there was an earlier history about people from Sussex - Sussex Born - Aussie Bred - a book that the family researchers may have - and which may have info useful to you.

Although the family researchers are strangers to me, I will try to track them down for the info that you are seeking, if you wish (ie if you are still pursuing this matter after all these years).

FYI: James Foord died 2 months after he arrived in Australia -and his wife didn't marry again until 7 years after he left England - so perhaps he was presumed dead rather than known to be dead.

Cheers - Helen

Hi HGRich / Mark,

Does your knowledge extend to Ringmer Foord's?

Would love to hear from you if it does.

Hi Spark

I contacted my sister-in-law who does family research - but, as this isn't my area of research, I can't verify the following info - but it may identify a line for you to pursue.

It appears that there is a close link between the Ringmer Foords and Mark's ancestor, Edward Foord - and they are very distantly related to James Foord.

Mark indicates that his line starts with William (b 1775) and Elizabeth Foord of Westham - and his line seems to be (but please check info if you can - and please appreciate that any typos are duplicated here):

From William's parents:

John Foord (b 1742) and Judith Wellar (b 1740) of Ringmer
Thomas Foord (b 1703) and Mary Weller of Ringmer
Thomas Foord (b 1667) and Anne Hover of Ringmer
Thomas Foord (b 1640) and Marey (?) of Eastbourne
Nicholas Foord (27 October 1605) and Joanne Grinte of Eastbourne

Mark's family descends from Nicholas and Joanne's son, Thomas (b 1640 or 1645), and my family (ie that of James Foord) descends from their eldest son, Jerimiah (b 1627).

Nicholas' parents were:
George Afford (b 1556) and Joanne Putland (b 1570) of Herstmonceux
Richard Afford (b 1530) and Alice (?) of Herstmonceux
and then the line peters out with:
Mr Afford (b 1505) of Herstmonceux.

I hope that this info proves to be helpful.

Cheers - Helen
