Yes, John's age looks more like 'mos' to me on enlargement.

The only reason I queried the family is because of Anne Howard with 'married' next to her name. Surely 2 daughters didn't marry a 'Howard'. Could this be Ellen using a different name ??? Though she has a few, Anne isn't one of them. Maybe the transcriber was having a really bad day altogether!

I have tried to find this family on 1891 to see what children there are at home - hoping for an Ellen but haven't spotted them. It's driving me nuts ;D

Likewise Matilda who may be hopelessly tramscribed on 1901 - can't see a trace of her - possibly a servant somewhere - she isn't with family.

Haven't  spotted a marriage between Ellen Viney and a John Howard and have checked Civil Registration for a few years. Only checked under Ellen Viner/Viney though.

Help ::)

Oh Tricia, you have found all my brickwalls.  My cousin thinks she has found Matilda (another one with 3 names) but under Eva so she is busy trying to untangle that line........

I 've checked from 1896 to 1900 for a Howard/Viney marriage without success.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Well, we think she is.......

The Pain/es are paternal and the Howard/Vineys maternal;  just my luck to get  brickwalls on both sides!

Thanks again,

The 1901 census transcriptions are notorious for idiocy. As an example, whilst searching for the Howards I saw a John Harward in Battersea. That was clearly our man but the actual image said clear as can be that his name was Hammond.  ::)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Oh dear; would the best thing be for me to look at the actual census sheets?(I guess that's in London)

Already got one mistranscribed in the family in 1901.........Gt Aunt Matilda is down as Mubilou!

Thanks again, advice much appreciated.

You could try this site

http://www.namethesaurus.com/Thesaurus/Search.aspx

which provides alternative spellings/transcriptions.

Type in the name you are looking for and it will generate a set of alternatives, including real examples like Heward, Howardew.

If you are using ancestry you can even try searching on "How*" (you need the first three letters).

Hi,

Iwonder if you can can see thiss one too? I have a James Neville born also in Battersea in 1882. In 1891  he was still in Battersea with his parents and siblings. By 1901 the parents were dead. Eldest brother Christopher was married and living in Bexhill where James married in 1905. Can anybody see what James was up to in 1901?

Thanks

Brigcs
