Hi Jenn !

Did his service record not give any clues ?? sometimes they say what other regiments (if any ) he served with etc ... ! Do you know who he was with in WW1 - his rank etc ? there is no British database - so as much information as you can give will help !

The only Henry Townsend born Wiltshire circa 1873 that I can find with any connection to Swindon, was Henry born Blunsden Wiltshire, the son of William and Eleanor. On the 1891 census Henry was working in a railway factory in Swindon. He married Evangeline Lucy Strange in 1891 and had children, according to the 1901 census in circa 1895, 1897 and 1899. On the 31st March 1901 census Henry was a grocer's carter in Swindon. These dates wouldn't give this man a large window of opportunity to serve in the Boer War - October 1899-March 1902.

If your Henry Townsend served in the regular army his army service record would nearly always be in The National Archives. Records by this time were indexed alphabetically by name not regiment. Likewise for the Imperial Yeomanry - a volunteer force who served in South Africa. You would need to either visit TNA or engage a researcher to search for his army service papers.

Regards

Valda

Hello there

First to L A no his record for WW! in Australia has no reference to his britich service .

To Valda  yes that is the right henry townsend i do have all his details  in fact the child list being born in 1899 was in fact born 1898 he is my grandfather harry

So i guess there is no quick way to find if he really did serve in the Boer War
I finally found a relative only last week ( my grandfather had abonded his wife and two littlies and consequently my dad had no knowledge of him ) who could tell me some facts and he said he served in both wars

thanks to both of you
regards jenn
