Cemetery in Herts
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 14:52 BST (UK) »
Is there anyway I can find out where my ancestors are buried, which cemetery?

Death certs state areas Hertingfordbury (1846)
Bengeo, Hertford 1849.
Hertford 1846.
Hertford Union Workhouse 1867.
St Andrews Hertford 1894.
Hitchin, County of Hertford 1900.

Is there any index I can search to find the resting places of the above?

Thank you.

Hi Pettsy

If the burials aren't listed on either the NBI or Hertfordshire Burial Index, neither of which are complete, then I think that you would need to check with the local cemeteries for the areas.

http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ (The Herts Burial Index is available here - pay to view.)

http://www.eastherts.gov.uk/council/atoz/cemeteries.html

http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/websites/hcc.htm - Hitchin would come under North Herts.

A lot of the Memorial Inscriptions for the older parish churchyards have been indexed by the HFHS, and are available for sale from their bookshop.

If you check with HALS I know they have a lot of records for burials within Hertfordshire. Sadly there werent any records for the churches that I needed. I hope you have more luck.

Jan

Sadly a lot of gravestones have been taken away so they can cut the grass etc and in my case, no one had thought to record what was written on the stones or even where they had been, that news broke my heart.

Hi Jan,
That's terrible to move the headstones and not copy down the inscriptions. How sad.

My mum in law went to Glasgow to visit her grandparents graves, she had the plot number etc.. when she went there, there was no stone, it was so distressing for her.
They said if the stones falls, they leave it to go into the ground. They died 1930's-1940's, you'd have thought the tombstone would still be there.  ???
I was lucky in Scotland all mine were still there from 1830's on wards.

I am planning to go to HALS in the summer, I hope I have better luck finding the lairs.
