Eliza and John Curran(Curren) look up please (modified)
« on: Tuesday 23 May 06 16:16 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is there anyone who may be able to help me.  I have John Curren (Curran) who was born c.1848 and Eliza, his sister was born c.1844.  His mother was Mary.  I now know the father was Tobias (from John's marriage cert)

In 1861 they were in Durham, England and Mary was a widow, they just put that they were born in Ireland but in 1901 John added (or it was transcribed as) Co.Cairo which I've been told doesn't exist so I'm hoping that Carlow is the correct place as phonetically they are similar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Have now found a Tobias Curran on Griffiths Valuation in Carlow.

If anyone can put me out of my misery I would be so grateful.

Suziq  :)

Hi Suziq
Thank you for getting back to me, Baragh is a civil parish in the Buclody/ Kildavin area of Carlow/Wexford borders. I have looked up Kilbranish, and it seems to be a part of the town of Bunclody, I have taken a look and baptisms appear to be under the Clonegal catholic parish, which is about five miles from Kilbranish. Unfortunately there would be no civil records previous to 1864. as they were destroyed during the civil war.
In the baptisms there is a john curran born in orchard which is a couple of miles north of bunclody in 1842.
there are also currans baptising children in craan and carrigduff at the times that you say. There are about 8 currans born in this parish from 1842 to 1852 but none in kilbranish, and there are no eliza currans anywhere.
maybe you can have a look at the records yourself at
http://www.igp-web.com/carlow/Clonegall_Bapt_index.htm.

I hope this has been some help to you, and if i can be of some more assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.

All the best

....Unfortunately there would be no civil records previous to 1864. as they were destroyed during the civil war...

Full civil BMD registration started in 1864 (non-Catholic marriages were recorded from 1845) and all these records survived intact.
