Ramseys in Waterford? -COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 24 May 06 20:50 BST (UK) »
John Samuel Ramsey born 17 Apr.1858 in Londonderry City, son of Thomas and Sarah Jane (Ramsey) Ramsey.
Family lived in Derry then moved to Dundalk, Co. Louth (Thomas worked for railway?).
According to family tradition, John Samuel Ramsey supposed to have moved to Waterford. Have old photograph in family album of 2 boys dressed in sailor suits taken in Waterford-  suspect these are John's sons as they resemble other Ramseys.
Can anyone help?

Hello aghadowey,

Do you know when the Ramsey family were in Dundalk and in Waterford?

What denomination were the family as you may have to look at church records.

Have all Ramseys in Dundalk sorted out- it's this branch in Waterford I don't have anything on yet.
John Samuel Ramsey born 1858 was the one that was supposed to go to Waterford and we have a Waterford photo of two little boys in sailor suits who might be his sons. Am waiting until 1901 census for Waterford comes online to see if I can find them.
Ramseys were Presbyterian although some Dundalk ones were Church or Ireland.

Have you written to the local history room at waterford city library ? They have a newspaper index that covers the 19th century. There might be some mentions of them in it.

Thanks very much for the suggestion. Will maybe wait a bit longer for 1911 and 1901 census and then try library (trouble is I'm not sure where they lived or how long they might have stayed in that area).

Have just found John Samuel Ramsey's death listed in civil registration index:
John Samuel Ramsey, age 54, Oct./Dec.1912 Waterford district. Also a possible marriage Oct./Dec.1896. Hopefully 1911 census will give more details when it comes online.

Thanks for the directory details- looks like the houses are no longer there. Hoping to find more details from 1911 census when it finally is put online.
