Hi. I live at 35 Norfolk Road and noticed the door on the side of the house is engraved with 'School Entrance'. Does anyone know more about this please and when the house was a school. What for etc? :-)

i was born in maidenhead & lived in market street, first went to east street school round the corner as my great aunt edith beare was headmistress [she lived next door to us] then went to the convent of the nativity, college road, now closed.  lynton house school was in same road.  beare family all came from maidenhead, holyport area.  another relative marion beare was married to own hildreth of the bike shop & i remember it well.
got lost first time i went back to maidenhead after several years absence as father moved away - took a while till i recognised castle hill 7 methodist church

Hello Bryan and Yogibeare....

   Welcome to Rootschat.

Bryan .. I'm trying to think of a school as such in Norfolk Road... ,
from St Lukes..Sunday school maybe or has the door come from another source.

Yogibeare... My brothers attended East str. I think there are some old pics on here.. Try the search facility on the top of the page.

Have fun... Lesanne  ;)

Well the house is pretty much opposite St Lukes so could be. I am sure its an original door. I will try and take a pic and post it on here

Hi Yogibeare

Small world.  Owen Hildreth was my wife's uncle, although I don't think she ever met him.

Bryan Dobson,

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.  I cannot help with the school door except to suggest that maybe it was a Sunday School?  It was interesting to read your post as I live just around the corner and a lot of my family were born/living in Norfolk Park Cottages.  My particular interest is that you are a Dobson and my maiden name is Dobson.  My father was born in Waldeck Road in 1905 (there were 11 children!) and his father in Hungerford.  I wonder if we have a connection?

Regards, Abiam2
