Latest update:

Alistair Carmichael MP has hit the BBC NEWS headlines in support of the campaign to release the 1911 Census Online in 2004/5.

Although 1 in 5 MPs have been contacted by UK Census Associates, only 48 MPs have signed the 1911 Census Early Day Motion (EDM 871). As you know, they are aiming at 350 signatures – half the House of Commons.

On that note: I wish you the best of luck with your campaign, but wether or not it is successful will the 1911 census be published online once the 100 year technicality is void? The government would be foolish not to as they made SO SO much money from the 1901 census.

:D How many of us, have to buy multiple certs, to find the info on 1911.

When it eventually becomes available, they will get the revenue
          from a couple, perhaps none.

Census CD writers, bless them all, have their moorings, on the Med
                                      booked already.

Given the rumours concerning the condition of the remaining 1911 census documents the release of this information will probably not be the panacea that many envisage. One comment in a recent article " ...... staff instictively know the location of the documents by the smell of damp ..." does not augur well for the state of these documents.

Also to remember:

http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/exhibns/women/suffragette.html

Despard, Charlotte.  Women in the Nation.  London: Women's Freedom League, [1909]  Sp Coll f255

Charlotte Despard (1844-1939) was president of the Women's Freedom League, an organisation which  advocated civil disobedience and militancy that broke no "moral law". Despard was instrumental in a number of Suffragette activities such as the scheme whereby women refused to give their information to the April 1911 census.

I think of number of people are going to be sorely  disappointed by the number of absent households.

It's now hit 170 MPs - including the Shadow Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs - the Dept that is currently defending the 100 year closure law. My MP has also promised to sign up ... see http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=29569 to see if yours has signed up - if not see www.theyworkforyou.com to contact them.

in 1911 AND 1921 the householders were not told that the informatioin they gave would be kept secret for 100 years. They were told their details would be kept confidential for ever. The current  goverment introduced the 100 year rule as a balance between the needs of family historians and the privacy of those on the census records. After 1921 the 100 year closure period was introduced and that was what was told to the people post 1921.
