There are only three entries showing on IGI for this time period in the right areas (the first two are submitted entries, the last is an actual extract from OPRs):

Robert Bell  Christening:  03 AUG 1774  Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland
Parents: Father: Alexander Bell Mother: Margaret Wauchoplin

ROBERT BELL  Birth: 29 MAY 1776   Christening: 10 JUN 1776  Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland
Parents: Father: ROBERT BELL Mother: MARY LOVE

ROBERT BELL  Christening: 03 APR 1774  Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents: Father: WILLIAM BELL Mother: AGNES FORREST

If he followed Scottish naming traditions for the names of his children, you might get some clues there.

Regards.

Monica

Thank you Monica,
I am having problems with Robert.
An old letter states he was born in Bathgate, but all records support him being born 1774 ?
Also, all Bells seemed to name themselves from a very small name pool !
I will try and research your reply a little further.
Thanks again,
Chris.

Just one point to remember, sometimes when you see a Christening date, the birth could have been x years before. For lots of reasons, parents didn't always christen their children immediately after birth. So the Bathgate entry on IGI could still be relevant.
