Directories of Belfast & Province of Ulster
« on: Saturday 27 May 06 21:55 BST (UK) »
I am sure many members have seen comments about the Belfast and Province of Ulster Street Directories and wondered .. "why so many references to street directories?" The early directories contained the names of all inhabitants whose houses were valued above six pounds.   The directories are divided into several sections. There are several important sections. The first contains a list of all streets in Belfast at any given date and the residents (households and businesses) in those streets. The next section is an Alphabetical list of Belfast and Ballymacarrett (a Belfast suburb). A section for Professions and Trades is followed by two short lists one for the Country Residents in the vacinity of Belfast and the other is the Village Directory which is the villages on the outskirts of Belfast. The last important list covers the nine counties of the Province of Ulster and the Towns in those counties. These are Counties Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry (Derry), Monaghan and Tyrone. Below you will find a list of people who have directories and may be able to assist you. They are not the only people so try not to annoy them too much. Local librarians are very helpful too. I phoned the librarian in the local studies section in Enniskillen as I was searching for a Lord Armstrong (I was assisting someone who posted a query on another site). The librarian told me she is aware of Rootschat and assists members if they send queries directly to the library. She said it would be too much extra work, and I see her point of view, to keep an eye on the threads at this site. So never be afraid to send a message to a library .. they are there to help you.  The local libraries are divided into five area boards .. http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryBoards.asp The Belfast Education and Library Board has a full set of Directories in the Ulster and Irish Studies section of the library at the Central Library, Royal Avenue, Belfast http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=168 The North Eastern Education and Library Board has a set at the area board head quarters at Demesne Avenue, Ballymena, Co. Antrim http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=177 The Southern Education and Library Board has a set at the Irish and Local Studies Library 39c, Abbey Street, Armagh. http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=151 The Local Studies section of the South Eastern Education and Library Board is based at their Headquarters, Windmill Hill, Ballynahinch, Co. Down. I use this regularly. Please call first at the Ballynahinch Library in Main Street. The staff there are extremely helpful. If you need to go to the headquarters they will phone the librarian there to see if she if free. They will then give you directions on how to find Windmill Hill.  http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=176 Last but by no means least we have the Western Education and Library Board The Centre for Migration Studies is based at the Ulster American Folk Park, 2, Mellon Road, Castletown near Omagh. http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=146 Both the Board Headquarters and Library are at 1, Spillars Place, Irishtown Road, Omagh http://www.ni-libraries.net/app/Directory/LibraryDetail.asp?LocationID=141

That is a good collection of directories. It will take me some time to get such a collection.

Christopher...could you please advise if there is any mention of the familires of Edward Kirk b. 1818 (married Anne Clarke) or his older brother Henry Kirk (b.1815) who married Mary Smith in any of the Belfast directories.

Edward and Henry's father's name is as yet unknown.

They left Belfast for Canada circa 1862/63.   Edward and Henry Kirk were farmers in Ontario but many of there son's became bricklayers.  Anne clarke's death record in Canada states she was born in Belfast as does many of the Canada marriage records for their children.

Edward Kirk was my GG Grandfather.

Thank you for any help you or Anthony can provide.

Names are Kirk, Clarke and White

Hi Stephen. There was a Edward Kirk a Jeweller at 9 Curtice St in 1819, could be his father but there is a big ?.

He is the only Kirk name for 1819. no Kirk names for 1830,
there are 3 Kirk names for 1840 & 3 for 1846/7 & 6 in 1852 & 5 in 1860.

Thank you for your quick reply.  I don't think a jeweler fits the family profile.

Could you send the first names for the 3 names for 1840 and 1846/7.  Also the six for 1852.

Perhaps we can identify from the naming pattern of their children.

Thank you.  Stephen - New York

Anthony- would it be possible to look in your directories for the following?

John Morrison, Moy (d.July 1922), in 1911 & 1920 directories. Looking for a name of house (of any) and/or address & occupation. He was a JP and might have been something like a linen merchant?

and

1884 directory- James McLean/MacLean, etc. (spelling varies) landstewart to Earl of Charlemont in 1881, possibly living at Roxborough?

Any information much appreciated.
