I am sure many members have seen comments about the Belfast and Province of Ulster Street Directories and wondered .. "why so many references to street directories?"
The early directories contained the names of all inhabitants whose houses were valued above six pounds. The directories are divided into several sections. There are several important sections. The first contains a list of all streets in Belfast at any given date and the residents (households and businesses) in those streets. The next section is an Alphabetical list of Belfast and Ballymacarrett (a Belfast suburb). A section for Professions and Trades is followed by two short lists one for the Country Residents in the vacinity of Belfast and the other is the Village Directory which is the villages on the outskirts of Belfast. The last important list covers the nine counties of the Province of Ulster and the Towns in those counties. These are Counties Antrim, Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry (Derry), Monaghan and Tyrone. Below you will find a list of people who have directories and may be able to assist you. They are not the only people so try not to annoy them too much. Local librarians are very helpful too. I phoned the librarian in the local studies section in Enniskillen as I was searching for a Lord Armstrong (I was assisting someone who posted a query on another site). The librarian told me she is aware of Rootschat and assists members if they send queries directly to the library. She said it would be too much extra work, and I see her point of view, to keep an eye on the threads at this site. So never be afraid to send a message to a library .. they are there to help you. The local libraries are divided into five area boards ..
